Hello all,
I'm new to the boards but not new to gaming or console modding. I have a pile of Model 1 Sega Genesis consoles and was considering modding them for S-video and selling them.
This isn't really a classified ad or anything, but it still may be in the wrong section. I'm just curious if there is interest in this sort of thing or if I'd be wasting my time.
Genesis S-Video Interest
Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
Theres plenty of interest in Genesis modding, I've always wanted to atleast overclock my Genesis but I'm a little weary since A). I have no prior knowledge of hardware tinkering and B). I think my Genesis is special, as I can't seem to find much info on my motherboard revision (2.3 I think it was). If you do S-Video mod it do share with us any website you use to do it.
BananaXX's FS/FT Shop!!! +27 feedback and growing!!
Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
I could make simple wiring diagrams and instructions for anyone that is intested in doing it themselves.
Most of what you find is a crazy complicated circuit to build the amplifiers for the Svideo mod but there is a much simpler circuit that works just as well.
I am curious as to what people wold pay for an already modified console. I wouldnt think it would be really worth the time and materials unless I'd be able to sell them for around $100 each. Maybe that's more than what people would be willing to pay. Thats just what I'm trying to feel out.

Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
I found that issue when trying to modify and sell SNES jr. modded for s-video. You'll be lucky to break even.
Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
Yeah,
It wasn't really a money making idea, just something that I enjoy doing and if I could make a few bucks to fuel my classic game habbit, then all the better.
Here's a question for you. Where did you source your panel mount S-Video connectors? They're somewhat difficult to find.

Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
Jamma Nation X has a kit. Or you could just source all the parts from digikey.
I used the kit from Jamma Nation X. But I had to add a 1k pot to tweak one of the lines as I was getting some vertical lines in the image. Looks fine now.

Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
Thanks for the reply.
The kit on jamma nation x seems a little spendy for what you're getting as the resistors and capacitors literally cost pennies. I found everything on digikey except the s-video jack.
The pot is a neat idea. I have noticed some slight vertical lines on one that I did on some dark backgrounds, but it wasn't enough to bother me. I guess one could adjust the pot until the lines were gone, then take a measurement with a multimeter and then just solder in place an appropriate resistor.

Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
you're pretty much paying for the gold plated panel mount jacks.
Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
I found a place called Arcade-Electronics in Virginia that looks like they may be a suitable connector provider.
I started working on the pile of Genesis' that I have. I will see if I can pull maybe 80 bucks plus shipping for them. I would also consider doing trades for other stuff I'm looking for since funding my game hobby is really all I'd want out of it.
I'll post in the classifieds when I have some ready.

Re: Genesis S-Video Interest
In my case the SNES uses a multi out connector, so I just used a SNES/N64/GCN s-vid cord.
