The PSX models had different startup screens. I have no idea if anyone has payed attention to it, but the pre-Dual Shock models (SCPH-55xx and under) had the TM placed after the Sony logo. When SCPH-70xx came out, the TM was then placed after "COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT".

The forms of the Sony logos also look a little different. The Dual Shock versions look a little longer and thinner. I remember that I actually used to call pre-Dual Shock consoles "thick diamond" when I was a little kid, lol.
Was there any reason to why Computer Entertainment got the TM a little later on? Did someone try to infringe it, perhaps?

The one where the logo looks shorter and fatter is because they artificially squeezed the image into a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.
The PS1 displayed in a 4:3 square AKA "standard" aspect ratio by default and only a few games ever took advantage of it's widescreen display capability and high resolution mode.

Later ps1 models had a cool video screensaver effect when playing cd´s.
You have to press Select while in the cd player screen (where you can select tracks, etc)
Then there is a button to toggle the different effect, also a color changing button and also the ability to turn a blurring effect on

As far as the states, not many wide-screen TVs were around as far as I recall. But in Japan, even back in the SNES days they had wide-screens fairly available. I always saw SNES' on display that way.

When the PS1 first came out we had a 4:3 CRT but it was about a year after the launch in the UK that we got our first Toshiba Widescreen TV with surround sound. It was awesome.
