Xbox(original, not 360) Mod
What is Xmugen, XMBC scripts, BAED?? The reason I ask is because a co worker of mine can do all this for me on my original xbox but I feel kind of funny about it.
I most likely won't do it but I was curious since I have no clue what any of this is or how it works.

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Hey man, go for it. Basically it'll turn your xbox into an all out awesome media center. You'll be able to run emulators and all kinds of other nifty things on it without losing regular console functionality.
Re: Xbox(original, not 360) Mod
There is absolutely no reason not to do this. You retain *all* of your Xboxs original functionality, and you can do so much more. Xmugen is a port of a home brew fighting game system. XBMC is a fantastic media center application. BAED is the Big Ass Emulator Disc, it contains a ton of emulators and roms for all sorts of classic systems.
One of the best reasons to do this is that it allows you to dump your Xbox games onto the internal hard drive. You never have to switch discs again. For it to be really useful, you need a bigger hard drive, which can be a pain to set up. Ask your friend for more info.
Since Xbox live for the oXbox is gone, there's nothing to lose by modding your xbox. I use my Xbox with XBMC every night, I'd hardly touch it at all if it weren't modded. Buy a 6 pack of good beer, and make an evening out of the project. Play some good classic emulated games with a friend who's really doing you a nice favor.

Really? Cool! Yeah, this guy's a wiz and a freak with this stuff, been working together for almost 9 years so I trust him, plus he's talking about how he can put in 160 gigs for me too, unless that's part of it when you Mod an Xbox? I have no clue, but from what I'm hearing from you guys I think I'd be insane not to do this. I just didn't want my Xbox to get ruined and not be able to play my original games. I believe as far as emulators and Roms it would have: MAMEOx, MAMEdOx, Surreal 64, PCSXBOX,CPX3, and Final Burn Legend 1.3 which I have no clue what the hell that is, I just shook my head(in fact the only thing I recongnized was MAME). Along with the BAED for what seems to be all the classic systems. All this would be preloaded for me as well.

Sounds like a cool guy. If he's giving you 160 gig, he'll have to open the xbox to install a hard drive. It's not a big deal, and is definitely worth the effort.
MAMEoX is the original Xbox MAME port, MAMEdoX is a little more current. Surreal 64 is an N64 emulator, which I've honestly never found compatible enough to use. PCSX box is a port of the PCSX Playstation emulator. I haven't used that. CPX3 appears to be a CPS3 (arcade) emulator, it's new to me though. I'll have to check it out. Final Burn Legends is another arcade emulator that does Neo Geo, CPS1, and CPS2 games (maybe more, I don't remember). It's generally faster and more accurate than MAME, for the set of games it supports.
It's definitely nice having these done for you. When I set up my xbox I had to log into an IRC channel and download individual emulators from an fserve bot. It's a pain in the ass actually. Looking around a bit, it looks like I need to update some of the software on my xbox again.

Really, as this point, there is no reason NOT to do it. Original XBOX live has been shut down, so it's sorta a win-win now. Don't have to worry aobut getting banned, and you add a crap load of functionality to your box. I love picking up old oXbox with disc read errors at pawn shops, and softmodding them.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
Re: Xbox(original, not 360) Mod
Forget the 160GB HDD, you should spend a little cash on a 500GB. Once you realized how awesome a modded XBOX is, you are going to need a bigger HDD.

Re: Xbox(original, not 360) Mod
You know I was actually thinking about that. I have a feeling I will end up needing the space anyways and 500GB should suffice. 160GB is just what he happens to have and being that I was going to throw some money at him for doing this for me, although he's insisting that it's not necessary, I don't feel right about it and might as well go for the 500GB. It's weird because we're just really work friends and don't really get together outside of work too often. I did go to his bachelor party, wedding, and help him move into his house and then out of the house during the divorce (long story). Yeah, it is very nice of him to do this. Maybe he just wants to repay me? I don't know, not necessary but I don't want to pass this up and I'm going to do something for him regardless if he won't take cash. I do know I just went completely off subject here!
Sorry.
Thanks for the support and info on this stuff guys! I'm pretty stoked about this now and I'll let you know once I get my Xbox back fully loaded! I feel like it's going to come back all Terminator bad ass like or more like I'm supping up a car into a hot rod or something like that!!

Don't forget that if you want to do the hard drive upgrade you need to make sure you use an IDE hard drive and NOT a SATA drive. The Original Xbox is only compatible with IDE HDD.

Re: Xbox(original, not 360) Mod
Apparently I will be able to add additional Roms if I want to as well but I have to FTP them over. How do I do that from my laptop or external HD to this modified Xbox? Is it easy?
