Game Gear suggestions

Post by RXRob »

Hi everyone, I've joined the forum just to ask this question (long time reader of the site and fourm)

This weekend I acquired a Game Gear with Sonic, Columns, Jungle Book and Spider-Man.

Quite frankly, I don't like any of the games that came with it so now I'm after suggestions about what to add to my collection.

The only idea I've had so far is the Master System Converter as I remember having a lot of great games on that system.
Currently playing: Skies of Arcadia, Mass Effect 2, Backbreaker

Consoles Owned: XBox 360, Gamecube, Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Saturn, N64, N64DD, PSone, XBox, Game Boy Advance SP, Gameboy Pocket, Game Gear.

I also loved the sonic games. Castle of Illusion had a strong port as well.

I think this has been done here a few times before but OK, since I'm gearing up to buy more and play more after a capacitor replacement for my failing screen (the viewing angle is now uncomfortable after playing through Sylvan Tale and most of Tails Adventure), here's some I like, or will be trying to obtain shortly:

RPG:
Crystal Warriors - The best! A solid rpg for GG.
Defenders of Oasis - Seemed short, but good. Nothing to complain about.
Shining Force 2 - Sword of Haija - Tactical RPG that's good. Continuation of an unreleased in english SF: Gaiden (later released for SCD).

Action RPG:
Tails Adventures - It's a Platformer RPG staring Tails! The only metroidvania kinda game on GG and pretty fun.

Racing:
Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament - The best(?) top view racing game on gg?
Sonic Labyrinth - a bit slow and difficult, but it looks great and I played it quite a bit. It's decent.

Platformer:
Ristar the Shooting Star - Once you get the mechanics down it's pretty good.
Alien 3 - great graphics, gameplay and action (imo).
Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos (best), Triple Trouble (good), 2 (meh) - already mentioned they're all good and why Sega made the system.
Ninja Gaiden - compared to the competition on the system, it's good and fun!
Pengo - Ya it's simple, but it's fun!

Shmup:
Fantasy Zone - fair, but bad scrolling. It retains it's charm and the colors complement the screen.
Aerial Assault - fun game.

Beat'em'up/fingthing:
Streets of Rage 2: Solid port. I haven't tried SOR1 but it's probably good too.
Fatal Fury Special - Seemed solid. Can't complain.
Battletoads - It's good by GG standards. get it if you can.
Samurai Shodown: Played it a bit and didn't find anything really lacking despite the hardware limitations.
Mortal Kombat II - not really worth buying but somehow I've owned it thrice so it can't be expensive or hard to find and is not really bad...

puzzle:
Bust-A-Move - It's hard to go wrong with PB and they didn't screw it up.
Baku Baku Animal - With few to choose from I like it.
Sega 4-in-1 - Easy to get 'cause it's atari-like gameplay... it's still got fun games like tennis.

If you can find them:
Megaman
Gunstar Heroes
- Both are awesome and imo nearly outshine the rest, but they're very expensive.

Also heard good things about but have yet to try (even emulated):
Woody Pop
Jurassic Park
Chicago Syndicate
Halley Wars
Super Battle Tank
Aleste 1+2
Wonder Boy 3 DT
Not wanting to just paraphrase i'll leave these up to someone here.

Oh and I hate Columns. I think Puyo Pop is on every system ever. Try that instead. Can't get into Ecco The Dolphin tho I hear it's well ported.

It's not condoned here, but if you're into fan translations, homebrew or crappy brazilian pirate stuff, Tototek has GG Pro in stock finally. Sylvan Tale and several other watered own franchise RPG fan translations are available.

The Jurassic Park game is very good, the controls are tight and responsive and its generally fun to play. Probably a bit on the easy side but I enjoyed it.

Personally I don't like any of the sonic games on game gear, the view is too zoomed in and you just run into stuff too easily. I love the SMS version of the ones that have SMS versions though.

Anyhow, I'd really recommend the GG shinobi games, they're both very good. The Wonder Boy games are fantastic too if you dont have them on Master System. Halley Wars is a pretty good shmup too. Those are the best of the limited amount of GG games I've played.

Thank you for such a detailed post Anapan, I shall certainly be looking for most of those around my local gold mines.

And I totally agree with alienjesus about Sonic. I think it's a combination of a rubbish screen (at least compared to modern screens that I'm now accustomed to) and a camera that's too close to the action.

I enjoyed the version of Dynamite Headdy that was released for the Game Gear. Other than that, I think Anapan got most of my favorites.

Battleship. It's different from the board game but its really fun. Only gamegear game I've managed to beat.

Halley is pretty good so far for the little time I've spent with it, but Aleste/Power Strike 1 & 2 are excellent. You'll have to find imports, but the GG is region free so it doesn't matter.
