Have you tried Soldier Blade? It's in the same vein of game but IMO is the best of the bunch. Probably one of my favorite games of all time.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Very different game. Blazing Lazers is by Compile, maker of such other greats as MUSHA, Robo Aleste, Space Megaforce, and Spriggan.

I wouldn't say it is very different. In fact, it is quite similar. Some people even list it in the same series (technically it is not, but it plays similarly enough that it feels like it to many). Of course, what you do say is correct!

Pappas, since you liked Blazing Lasers (who wouldn't, it is AWESOME), definitely give Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade a try. Also Final Soldier, which is a Japanese import only.

Spriggan would also be good for you, as would Sapphire (except for the $300+ price tag for an original copy and Arcade Card AND a Japanese PC Engine w/CD-ROM). Also check out Star Parodier if you have a Duo or Super System Card.

HuCard only, or do you have access to CD and Super CD games?

Well that's a bit of a sticking point. If you have the a CD attachment though, Lords of Thunder and Gate of Thunder are absolute musts.

As far as HuCard/TurboChip games go, I would say the Soldier games are the best. There's also the obvious classics like R-Type and Galaga. Dead Moon is alright too.

This game is pretty awesome, but I just cant beat the last world. I normally die at the level 9 boss rush rematch with the heart-like boss. I got to the final boss once.

The problem is that once you die on the boss rush, its torturous trying to survive the rest with no powerups after you continue.
