Can my silver slim US PS2 play games from other regions, or is it locked?

It's region locked, but there's ways to circumvent it. A mod chip will allow you to boot other regions, retail or burned. Then there's Free MCboot with Open PS2 Loader or ESR. OPL will load game images off a hard drive (internal or USB) or over a network, regardless of the region. ESR is a way to play burned games. You have to patch the image, then ESR can boot it, and I do believe there's no region check when using this method.

Once you find a way to defeat the region lock, playing NTSC-U or NTSC-J games isn't a problem, but trying to play PAL games on a NTSC console presents a problem. There's some fixes, though. A mod chip will have a feature that will try and make a PAL game playable on an NTSC console, though there's guarantees here. I'm not sure what's out there for 50/60Hz fixes (if any) when using OPL or ESR.

I'm not 100% on this info, since I have never tried to play PAL PS2 games before. I stand to be corrected...

Swap Magic will work, questionable if the screen is centered correctly.

I did a workaround:

I really need to get off my butt and get the PAL NTSC Conversion Guide started.

Thank you all for the quick responses. Damn, I wanted to play a few PAL games. Oh well, maybe I can find a cheap PAL ps2 online.

I was really hoping it would be like gamecube with the "freeloader" disc, gotta get some Doshin the giant every once in a while right?

Thanks again everyone

You'd still need a TV that will accept PAL input signals.

Wouldn't you need something to output the proper amount of electricity as well? Or would the ps2 pull all that it needed?

I think since the PS2 slim uses an external power brick you could probably just use a US brick on it since the voltage going to the system should be the same. I do not have a slim though so would need to make sure. But yes, with a fat you'd probably need a step up convertor.
