Do I need a Voltage Converter for my Famicom?

Post by Jamisonia »

I just imported one of these, with the disk system from Japan. I've played it a few times, so I hope I haven't hurt anything. I cam across this on famicom world. http://famicomworld.com/workshop/tech/f ... r-adaptor/

It says that since Japan's sockets output 100 V and ours output 120V its best to get a converter. I wasn't sure this was really necessary, as I've read before that these voltage ratings are more like ranges, and electronics are made to cope with ranges of 20-30 volts or so.

US voltage is advertised as 120, but is usually more like 110-115. It will make the power brick run a bit warmer, but as long as you're not using it out in a closed metal shed in 100 degree outside temps and it has plenty of air circulating it should be ok. You could also use a power pack designed for US wall voltage that puts out the proper volts, mA, and polarity.

I wouldn't waste my money, and higher power bill, on that. It's only 10-15 volts different, and many here have, myself included (a model 2 JPN Saturn since Sept. 2000... my friend has it now), been running Japanese consoles on the US power grid for years. Your Famicom and Disk System will be just fine on US power.

Like Breetai & Hobie, I have a friend who doesn't use a converter and all of his stuff is fine too. But I'm paranoid about things like that so I use one.
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Yes. AC adapter/power pack/wall wart/power strip cock blocker.

Lol. OK, I just wasn't sure. That's what I would suggest doing, just get a US AC adapter if you're really worried about it. But as others have said, I'm pretty sure it's not a problem. I used my JPN NeoGeo CD's power adapter in my US wall outlet and never had a problem.
