Resident Evil

Post by CFFJR »

So I've never made it a secret that I don't like Resident Evil.

However, my masochistic side is kicking in, and now I'm feeling like I should give the series another chance, and seriously play through them in a way I never had the patience for when I was younger.

That in mind though, I do want to make it as convenient as possible for myself. I wouldn't want to burn out halfway through.

So, that said, here's the noob questions. With the obvious exception of RE5, it seems that all of the main series games are playable on Gamecube. Is that right, or are there others?

Should I start with Zero? Also, is it necessary to play code veronica? And if so, where in the order should it be?

I guess to best sum it up, how should I tackle this?

Start with Resident Evil 1 remake on GameCube and Resident Evil 4. They are both really good and they play very different, so even if you don't like one, you might like the other. If you don't like either of those, there's not much hope for you liking the rest of the series, so I wouldn't bother. If you do, then I would move from 2 to 3 to Zero.

Above poster is pretty much spot on. I'll just add that I recommend playing Code: Veronica, as it's very good.

I tried to do the same thing a couple months ago. Ended up updating my B/S/T.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

All titles are available on gamecube, but be warned, the prices are astronomical, at least in the UK. I would just get 1 and 4 on the cube and pick up the others on PS1/2 or dreamcast if possible. My favorite versions of 2 & 3 are on the DC due to the bonus features and the hi-res models.

I would disagree with playing 1 & 4 on the cube first though. I would say start with the original game, (I'm biased as its my all-time favorite), but its got a lot of charm and really sets up the other games well. I think the remake has some glaring errors which spoil it a little. But then again, it has crimson heads.

Whatever you decide to do, this is a great series and I'm glad you're giving it a shot. I've spent countless hours playing these titles and they still hold up well in my opinion.

Don't start with Zero as it's kinda a crappy game. Coder Veronica is pricey on gamecube.

Just do 1-4 and decide from there.

Code Veronica is probably one of the best, if not the best Resident Evil game. Make sure to not skip that one.
Don't bother with Resident Evil: Survivor or Resident Evil 5. They are just terrible.

Make sure to play them at night in the dark too. 8)

The original RE is one of my all time favorites too, top 5 material. The OP said he doesn't like RE games to begin with though, and the PSX RE is the most dated looking and feeling one. That game is not for everybody, and it's likely everything that irritates him about RE can be found there in full force. The GameCube one is a great spin on it that freshens up the gameplay quite a bit, while retaining all the elements of the game at it's core that make people love RE. So I think starting there is probably the best bet for someone trying to give the games a fresh chance.

Thats a good point, the first is very dated now. There are some great new concepts in REmake which really show the potential the series had. Its a shame the way its turned with the later releases.

I agree that Code Veronica is not to be missed, it really develops the plot of the universe well, not to mention that it has some great gameplay rivaling RE2.

I've been playing the series for years now and frequently boot into the games to do a quick speed run. I recently replayed 1-CV but spent a great deal of time walking around, reading the files and messing about just as I did on my first time through. I must say, the Arrange modes on RE1 (PS1 DC) and RE2 (dreamcast) really freshened things up for me and made me appreciate what great games these still are.

I envy you CFFJR, I would love to be experiencing these games for the first time.

Personally I'd go with Resident Evil 1 on PSX or similar. Since the Gamecube remake ups the difficulty somewhat. For somebody who is unfamiliar with Resident Evil (Like I was when I tried playing the remake) it will kick your ass and you won't know why. The graphics in the original are dated, but that shouldn't bother anybody viewing this forum... The original Resident Evil gives a solid foundation on the idiosyncrasies of the series and isn't terribly difficult to play (if you can get passed the god-awful tank controls).

Remember, conserve ammo. If you're going 1v1 against a zombie, use your knife, it's cheap. Don't waste ammo on zombies you can walk around, you don't have to exterminate them. Listen. You can usually hear the zombies before you can see them.
