The man walked his route every single day for 30 years, never shot his gun to end a fight, talked everything through, never rode a bike or segway, always wore his hat and always talked to everyone like they were his brother or sister.
This alone is one of the things I find to be a good example of what I remember seeing as a young kid in my hometown back in Jersey. Sure it was only about 14 years ago that I was 5 years old, but it was still a time that you saw cops walk their beats and learn all the names and faces in their communities. Good policing and law enforcement through positive community outreach is now a rare and truly hard to come by thing, at least where I am now in NC.
In the age of cell-phones, wireless internet, instant information and more it's truly rare to see a cop that walks around in the hot summer heat with the rest of us, that freezes his ass off outside in the winter, and that never rides in a squad car jockeying a radio in a cushy seat and comfy conditions. This man was someone on a down to earth and human level that truly made a difference in people's lives through positive outreach and a smile.
You'll be missed Charlie Walker, you did your job exceptionally well.
