Remaining 2D Franchises?

Remaining 2D Franchises?

Post by Conn »

So I was browsing through Metal Slug Database the other day, and noticed the new 3D Metal Slug. I KNOW it's been annunced for a while, but I'm not really a huge Metal Slug fan, and I check MGDB once every month, and when I do it's mainly for MG MIA. But that's not what this topic is for.

It got me thinking- if even Metal Slug has gone 3D, are there any remaining 2D franchises*?

*1) I'm talking strictly gameplay here, not graphics or viewpoint. As in, you only move left and right.
2) Announced games DO count, so Kirby doesn't count
3) The franchise has to be a remaining one- not an old franhicse from the GeneSNES days tthat hasn't survived.

so even 3d games that play in a 2d world count?

so you have Pandemonium from the psx/saturn
Klona from the psx/ps2

is that the sort of thing you mean? or are you after games that should be coming out soon that you should keep your eye out for?

Yes, I'm talking strictly 2D worlds. So, Zelda would have never been a 2D game by this logic since it's always been a large world where you can move anywhere.

It's more or less curiosity, but having a list of 2D franchises is useful. I expect I'll be looking for the PS2 Klonoa now..

Actually, Mega Man X7 had multiple 3D parts, and there's the spinoff RPG Command Mission.

i don't keep up with a lot of new games (thus old games abandonning 2d roots) but how about...
contra, adventure island/wonder boy, golden axe, bubble bobble... i think those have pretty much survived. alex kidd and flashback haven't seen a sequel in forever but are worth mentioning

Contra isn't 2D anymore- it hasn't been since one of the PS1 games. Plus, there's the recent Neo Contra.

Megaman X8 was strictly side-scroller, unlike X7.
