Problem solved

Post by mluitjens1031 »

Everything is better so far. What's mine is mine and we're going to order Action 52 on Ebay soon.

So your mum knew the value of an Action52 cart? and found a buyer.

Dude, your mum is cool.

Probably not. Last time she did this she brought the game in to the game store down the street from us. What really pisses me off is that she probably sold it for like $60 to $80. It just makes me mad that Its not even her money that bought it. And, on top of that, she probably wasn't planning on even telling me this. She probably knew it's worth because of my excited reaction when it came in the mail and I was talking about what it was, but that was last may. This problem of selling things to fulfill my brother's wants started around last july. If I would know she'd start doing this I probably would have acted like Action 52 was just another common $3 game.

And just a side note, those of you who may think I'm freaking out like this over games, the problems go way beyond that, but I don't want to go into detail.

Dude, that really sucks. Really.

I think you should try talking it over seriously with your mom and explaining better how you feel. Your stuff is your stuff regardless of living in your mom's house!
I think even legally what she did was stealing (ethically I don't think there is any doubt).

It is different if she wants you to pay rent or something maybe she has the legal right to do that, I'm not sure considering at 17 you would be a minor.
I would be ok with her asking you to contribute some of your salary to the house expenses so that she has more free money to gift stuff to your brother, but not in the subversive way she did it (I don't care if it is "just a game" - it was something you cared about and worked for).

Really, see if you can talk about it and see if you can restore your trust in her. if it doesn't work, as you say consider hiding your stuff in order to be sure she can't pull another stunt like that. I hope your friend is trustworthy!

Reminds me of the time when I let my mom sell some videogame stuff for me at a garage sale, back when I traded/sold stuff. Basically she sold:

Sega JVC (A JVC)
Sonic 2, S&K, Sonic CD
Earthworm Jim
Vectorman 1-2
Ristar
Jurassic Park CD
Ecco the Dolphin CD
Few other games I can't recall
2 Controllers
6-button turbo pad controller

All for $10. And this is back in the 90's when this stuff probably would have went for a lot even at a garage sale or trade ins. Yeah I still haven't let this go! Have I ever seen a JVC in person since? Hell no. :x

... that said, yeah man that really sucks and isn't right at all. Sounds like you (both possibly?) need to set aside some calm time, sit down, and really talk about it, at least in your case and let her understand the situation and how meaningful your collection can be and all that. Doesn't sound like what she did was right at all.

That is exactly what I told her. If she would just ask we would be able to work something out, but that's just the problem, she doesn't. My friend is letting me box up my collection and keep it at his house for the time being, and I'm spending the night. I'm hoping at least she can think about what she has done. It,s not like the rest of the games she's sold before, like Contra and SMB3, this one cost me $200.

Sell something she likes a lot.

... but don't really do that! That's bad if this isn't the first time she's done this though.

Right now, best case scenario for me would be to go to that game store at opening in the morning and, if they still have it, explain to them what happened and try to buy it back for the price she sold it to them for. But, seeing how she went sometime in the afternoon while I was out, it might not be there.

She has done this on numerous occations since last may, and its not just games either. My bluray movies, Nintendo power magazines (don't even know how she sold those), and probably my car if i didn't always have my keys on me. Seeing how it's not really my brother's fault I can't blame him or take the DS, so if I have to store my whole collection in my friends house to protect it, then so be it.
