Neo Geo Pocket Color Acquired (Now about those games...)

Post by daito_kid »

Hooray, a guy was selling some NGPC on yahoo auctions, and I scooped one up with a Pachinko game (not that exciting) for about $15. Needless to say, I'm excited. I was looking at some good games for it, such as Sonic, and King of Fighters R2, and Samurai Showdown 2, but I was curious if there's any action RPGs for the NGPC?
PS. Any other recommendations?
My Console Collection: 3DS (JPNS), Dreamcast (US and JPNS), Genesis, N64 (US and JPNS), iPod Touch, NES, Xbox, Famicom, Colecovision, Super Famicom, Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, DS LL (JPNS), Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Faselei! is great and rare. I have an extra copy I would be willing to sell/trade. Look it up and let me know :)

Faselei! is supposed to be very good but I have yet to play the game.

Biomotor Unitron is supposedly like Pokemon but with giant robot parts. Also supposed to be quite enjoyable.

The Dive Alert games are like submarine simulator RPG-ish games that I've heard some people enjoyed, but some people despised.

I personally have Dark Arms Beast Busters 1999 which is a fun darky/gothicy little action game where you level up your weapon in an RPG-ish fashion.

EDIT Just realized you were looking for some other recommendations as well:

The Cardfighter's Clash games are similar to the Pokemon Trading game for GB but you're playing a different card game where the cards represent different SNK/Capcom characters. Pretty fun games.

Match of the Millennium is the best fighting game for the NGPC imho. The rest of the fighters are solid as well.

The games Metal Slug: First Mission & Metal Slug: Second Mission are both fantastic. They don't match the arcade games but they're still quite good.

Puzzle Bobble Mini has given me hours of fun and I'm colorblind yet I still play all the time.

The Sonic game and the fighting games you mentioned are great as well.

The best part about the system is most of those games can be found relatively cheap. The exception off the top of my head is Faselei! because of it's rarity. I would talk to Bradtemple if you are sincerely interested in that game.

The only action RPG that I'm aware of is Dark Arms, and I never really liked it, though some people love it. Czernobog's list is pretty good, and I'd say that your highest priority acquisitions should be SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millenium (without question the best fighter on the system) and Metal Slug Second Mission. I'd also like to add a recommendation for Gals Fighters, which is another great fighter for the console.

In case you don't already know, most games should play in whatever language you set the console to regardless of where the the game is from. They started to change this later on, and off the top of my head, the following games will not play in English unless you get an English language cart or have no English version at all: Gals Fighters, Faselei, Last Blade, Biomotor Unitron 2, Ogre Battle, SNK vs. Capcom: Cardfighters Clash 2, Evolution. There are probably some more than that, but I think those are the only ones that most people would care about.

I have most of the games mentioned here so far, here's my opinions:

Gals Fighters: A fast paced and brilliantly fluid fighting game, I much prefer this to King of Fighters R2

Sonic Pocket Adventure: A nice little remix/remake of sonic 2 (the levels are all new, but the level themes are heavily based on Sonic 2), it's pretty good, fast and the NGPC screen handles it well with no blur. The only thing is I find I dont come back to it too often.

Puzzle Link: This is a pretty fun little puzzle game - not incredibly mind blowing or thought provoking, but fast paced and dependent on accuracy - its pretty hectic and fun on harder difficulties.

Faselei!: I haven't given this much of a chance yet either, but it's considered to be pretty great. From the few levels I've played of this SRPG, its certainly unique, and it has the potential to grow on me. At the same time, I'm not sure how I feel about an SRPG where you can only control 1 character (I could be wrong about this, but it seems like this is true).

SNK vs Capcom: Cardfighters Clash: I dont like this one, although many swear by it. The card game is a little too simplistic to be entertaining imo, too reliant on luck - you make do with the cards you have and thats about it. To me, it doesn't have the strategy of Pokemon Trading Card game, a card game which I love. That said, I haven't given it much of a chance yet, so I could be wrong.

Dark Arms Beast Buster 1999: I've barely played this one (I got it a week or so back), but it seems OK to me so far. For some reason, I get a Lunar Knights vibe from it (Lunar Knights the DS game in case you don't know what I mean). I'll have to try it more.

Metal Slug 2nd Mission: This is a fantastic little run n gun, I think I prefer it to the arcade versons even. There are loads of levels (about 34) which are traversed in different routes depending which character you choose and how you perform in levels - sometimes failing a level sends you to a different mission to succeeding, or going out of a hidden exit takes you off the normal course - its pretty awesome. You get a health bar with 3 hits, but only 1 life per continue. The game is fairly nice about giving you health refills, but not to the degree where there's no challenge left - its still fairly tricky. You get up to 9 continues to get to the end of the game, but you'll wanty to keep replaying anyhow to see all the other missions. My second favourite NGPC game after Gals Fighters.

Pocket Tennis: I cant say much about this one, its tennis. It reminds me of Super Tennis on SNES or Mario's Tennis on Virtual Boy in its simplicity. This ones another new game, but it seems acceptable enough.

Puzzle Bobble: A nice version of puzzle bobble, it plays pretty nicely and the colours show up really well despite the small screen size because the NGPC screen is pretty damn nice for a battery powered non-backlit portable.

King of Fighters R2: Im a little unsure about this one, it seems rather slow paced to me, and the heavy/soft hit system (which is reliant on how long you hold a button down) takes a little getting used to. On the other hand, it seems really true to the franchise, and is often referred to as the best portable KOF game.

Neo Geo Cup 98 +: I sold this one, and would advise you to avoid it. Its a football (soccer) game which has some pretty unique and cool ideas - players get stat ups when you equip them with items before matches which you can buy, theres a slight RPG/management sim in addition to the football. Thats cool, but nfortunately the football sucks - its really inaccurate and too zoomed in so you cant see what you're doing and the computer just walks all over you.

The first 4 games in my list are available in a blister which contains those 4 games and plastic cases for them for pretty cheap (no manuals or boxes though, so its not for completionists). The second 4 games are available in another box set. The last 3 games are games I bought loose.

I'd love to hear more about peoples NGPC recommendations - I seem to have all the commonly talked about stuff. Anyone here have any of the following and would like to tell me a bit about them?: I'm particularly interested in opinions on the ones with *'s in front of them.

* Biomotor Unitron
* CoolCool Jam
Cool Boarders
* Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams
Crush Roller
* Dive Alert
Evolution (I hear this got released in the UK? That seems odd!)
Fatal Fury F
* Ganbare Neo Poke-kun
King of Fighters R1
* Last Blade
* Magical Drop Pocket
Metal Slug 1st Mission
Neo Turf Masters
* Ogre Battle: Legend of the zenobia prince (JP only)
Pacman
* Puyo Pop
* Puzzle Link 2
* Rockman Battle & Fighters
Samurai Shodown

Feel free to suggest other games I havent listed too (except SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Milennium - I know thats great, but I've heard plenty about it, I'd rather find out some stuff I know less about!)

Sorry about the long post XD

So what's a typical price to pay for Faselei? I see that some sellers on Amazon have it for around $30. There's not too many completed listings on Ebay for the English version.

I paid £17 (about $30) for an unboxed Faselei along with Sonic, Gals Fighters and Puzzle Link in a blister. Boxed versions seem to go for much much more.
