F-Zero Review (SNES)

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

An oldie but a goodie, here's F-Zero for the SNES, a launch title that I might have liked even more than Super Mario World back in the day.
Enjoy!

Great review as always with excellent background information. Your reviews are always a joy to read.

This is a game I was never able to get into personally. Part of that has to do with the fact that I was never a fan of the Mode 7 look which I always found to be grainy and lacking detail. This is one of those games where if you don't dig the graphics there's not much meat left on the bones because I didn't find a lot of variety in the gameplay either. I enjoyed the sequels to F-Zero a whole lot more than the original. It was an important launch title though, no doubt, designed to show what the SNES was capable of and it accomplished that task with flying colors (both literally and figuratively).

I absolutely love the music though, it's the only thing that kept me playing for a while. I also always appreciate the effort Nintendo usually puts in the back-story of their games no matter how simple the premise.

I own this on the VC. Nice review. I remember long summer afternoons playing this game. Epic.
Thanks everyone...

This is an interesting question. I hope the answer is yes. The last several F-Zeros have been quite outstanding from the impressive F-Zero GX and outstanding arcade experience in F-Zero AX to the Japan-only Climax.

I'm not sure how well F-Zero games sell though. To my knowledge there was just a single F-Zero AX arcade machine in Canada and the arcade it no longer exists.

GP Legends bombs in terms of sales and Climax was never released outside Japan at all.

I've been hoping for a DS version that would get the Mario Kart DS level of care but it never came to be. Here's hoping there might be something for the 3DS.

This and Pilotwings were my first SFC games. It's still fun to this day. My dad, who is a huge car nut a former racecar driver, and I used to battle each other to see who got the best lap times. We still do that, but with Gran Turismo 5. Oddly enough, this game got my dad into racing games. Those were great times. Anyway, thanks!
