Trouble With New PSTwo Disc Drive

Post by GSZX1337 »

Long story short:
I bought a modded PSTwo awhile ago, had troubles with reading games so I bought and installed a new disc drive.

The disc drive has trouble reading retail PSTwo games. I recently tried Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and every few cutscenes would skip constantly. It's not the disc, as I can play the game fine on my PS3. I can play CD Backups (like Raiden III) fine, but I cannot play any DVD Backups games. At all. I get The Red Screen of Death whenever I try to boot a DVD Backup. I don't think it's my brand of DVD, either. I've used Memorex (the same brand as the CDs that work), Verbatim, and Sony brand DVDs. I can also play burned Music CDs perfectly.

So far I've already tried reseating the drive and cleaning the contacts with alcohol and using compressed air on them.

Laser eye starting to go out. DVDRs and CDRs put more strain vs pressed discs.

Get another FAT PS2 and use HDAdvance/HDLoader with an internal hard drive. Saves wear of that laser eye and enjoy convenient Hard Drive menu driven quick loads. Install all your original games then put them away.

i agree with CRTGAMER , get a FAT PS2 with an Internal HDD and use Open PS2 Loader and HD Loader.

I have 13 FAT PS2's and not one has a Modchip in them , i use Free Memory Card Boot to boot Ulaunchelf then i select OPL or HD Loader.

Here in Australia FAT PS2's go for around $55 at Cash Converters

Did you try cleaning the lens? And what speed are you burning the DVDs at?

thats a good question from Ziggy a reply for it would help your situation

I can play CD Backups (like Raiden III) fine, but I cannot play any DVD Backups games. At all. I get The Red Screen of Death whenever I try to boot a DVD Backup

also with FAT PS2's theres 2 Potentiometers one for DVD and one for CD. Ive heard multiple of times people being able to use one of the 2 media types and the other not working.

I dont know if PSTwo has 2 Potentiometers but if it does you may want to checkout some info on adjusting the DVD Pot.

I wasn't wanting to clean the laser lens, but it looks like I might have to.

Last I remember, my DVDs were burned at 8x. I'll try burning another DVD at a lower speed.

Hmm, didn't know that. I'll see if the PSTwo has two Pots when I take it apart again.

hiya GSZX1337 , if you are going to try and adjust/tweak the DVD Pot i recommend researching the ohm ranges to stick to for example.

The default for a PSTwo is 1100ohms and its safe to go anywhere between 1100 to 600ohms.

If you do go below 600ohms you risk damaging the Laser Eye , i dont know the ranges for a PSTwo but i do have a PS2 Fat Repair App that has ranges for them.

I have done a tweak for a PS2 Fat before that was sold to me for 10US , it took a few attempts and it was back up and running so dont give up if a tweak doesnt work on the first attempt.

I cleaned the laser. It seems to have helped a little bit. I can now boot DVD backups so no more Red Screen of Death. The cutscenes run like shit, though. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando runs a little bit better as well. The cutscenes that were troublesome before skip less, but still skip. CD backups still run fine.

Looks like I'm going to have to adjust the pots.

I wanted to thank the people who posted advice in this thread. I bought God of War 1 & 2 recently and am playing through them for the first time and my PS2 was acting weird while playing. The music would keep loading and cutting out and reloading over and over. Also it completely locked up at some cut scenes. This only occurred during GoW. I read around and found out it probably had to do with the disc being dual layer (DVD9) and thats the only DL game I own. After reading this thread I went in there with a can of air and blew the outside and inside of the PS2 off and it is as good as new! 8)
