Not sure if this has ever been brought up, but it's something I've been curious about for awhile now. Logging around big CRT TV's is never too fun, so I wonder if this day and age there's thinner monitors or adapters that can capture the crisp and color quality of old TV's for old full screen games? Hopefully that makes sense.
I'm just not a fan at all with playing old consoles on my small HDTV through AV cables and such, it's all so utterly muddy and dark. I was even pretty dissatisfied when I bought the PS3 component cables to use for my PS2, games still just didn't look right to me. The funny thing is when I play PS1 games through my PS3 however, it looks fantastic, but I'm sure that's because it's through HDMI.
So yeah, any work arounds to this issue thesedays?

Re: TV alternatives for older consoles?
I'm not aware of a good alternative to CRT televisions for consoles that output composite RCA A/V or coax RF, etc. I suppose you could try to modify all of your consoles to output to component. FYI, you'll lose support for virtually every kind of light gun if you use anything other than CRT.

I'm a little clueless about 4:3 dimensions, but how big would full screen be on a 32' HDTV? That would probably be just fine.Opa Opa wrote:What screen size are you looking for?
@flamepanther: That's a pretty good point... don't these use light/reflections or something like that?
I guess maybe I could just look for a nice smaller CRT. The one I have in my room now is really big and I swear it's gotta way at least 100+ pounds, it's also so old it's got all the wood exterior, lol. Not something I plan to take when I move out.

Usually they rely on the timing of scanlines and hitboxes.Ryvius wrote:flamepanther: That's a pretty good point... don't these use light/reflections or something like that?

I think a HD CRT is a good compromise to handle all the Retro consoles and still get a great DVD pic. But at a loss of retro Lightgun support. Also very heavy, see my CRT vs LCD signature link.Ryvius wrote:I'm a little clueless about 4:3 dimensions, but how big would full screen be on a 32' HDTV? That would probably be just fine.

Thanks.
Very helpful guide there CRTGAMER, that should definitely come in handy. Sounds like I should look around for Gamecube component cables, although the pricing as you were saying in that guide looks ridiculous...
