PC version of Final Fantasy VII

Post by TheyCallMeTheSwede »

This is something that I am quite curious about, since I have been playing Final Fantasy VII as of lately (almost finished) and I remembered that they released it on PC, I am quite curious what are some of the key differences in that version.

The PC version looked quite a bit better than the PSX version. Also, there are mods out there that apparently upped the non-battle graphics to FF8 quality. However, there were stability issues (although I didn't experience many of them) and the music was not as good (although, again, there were mods that replaced the music with the original recordings).

I loved the PC version back in the day (despite all the flaws), but I haven't tried it lately and I'd imagine it is a pain in the ass to run on today's machines.

It's a total pain in the ass to get running. You have to patch it to avoid a crash during the forced Chocobo race, and the movies use an ancient codec that also has issues. In terms of the actual gameplay experience it's identical to the PS1 version, so I'd say stick with that.

This. I played the game on Windows XP SP2 and you have to make sure to patch it or it all goes to shit. I don't remember the game being at all graphically enhanced from the PS1 version and I played both quite a lot. Maybe it just wasn't enough for me to notice.

If you follow a guide you can install it, run some patches and have it playing the original music (or music from other sources like Advent Children and official remix cds), at higher resolutions, with better character models, and various other tweaks like removing the 9999 damage barrier and other nice gameplay modifications. If you do it all correctly it looks and plays really well and is imo the best way to enjoy the game.

I used miracle.flame's guide last time I installed it.

I think all that stuff's obsolete now with the custom graphics driver. Here's some links for that.

Last time I played it all of the crashing problems and bugs I used to be plagued with were fixed, and it looks like there's been a lot of work done since then so you shouldn't have many problems. If you do have problems, the guys on Qhimm's forum should be able to quickly solve them.

That's nice to hear. I invite everyone whom from now on installs the game to report back here on how easy / difficult it was to get the game up and running. Make me regret I sold my original copy a year or 2 ago... lol
I'm curious now as well. I might see if I still have it to install. I had no idea there were advancements in running the game and in modifications to the game since last I played.

If you have to read and download and do all that stuff you posted, I say it's worth the saved effort to just play it on Playstation.
