Hidden Gems in Mame

Post by CRTGAMER »

Hidden Gems in Mame

There are Hidden Gems in every console, but also unknown ones waiting to be discovered in the Arcades. Thanks to the wonders of Arcade Emulation most noteably Mame, there are some real hidden treasures easily found right at home.

I love the fast paced Williams series Arcades. Robotron and Defender especially really draw me in. Imagine my surprise of a copycat Defender with a side scrolling Shump type of gameplay! A run through a Defender tunnel with the same exact same sounds and similar graphics.

Okay, dig through that Mame directory, find your own treasure and please share your discovery. :D

Run this video thru, you can see how the thrust works like Defender.

I remember my dad saying that Tail Gunner used to be his favorite arcade game, but I've never played it. If anyone wants to check that one out, maybe you'll be surprised.

While it might seem kinda lame, the old Sailor Moon arcade game from Banpresto was actually a pretty solid brawler, but it only came out in Europe and Japan. While the source material isn't everyone's cup of tea, as a brawler it's pretty good, not streets of rage 2 or turtles in time good, but certainly not bad.

Two games I had never heard of previous to MAME, but are now on constant rotation..

Great Swordsman

I'm a fencer, so when it comes to finding any videogames depicting my sport, I'm only limited to either Soul Calibur II-IV, Bushido Blade, or Track & Field II. But when I found this unknown gem, I was hooked!

Image

It isn't anywhere near technical enough, (of course, it's kind of hard to get remises, counter-parries, and balestras down pat in an 8-bit game,) but it's charming in that it's pacing is dead on, there is an incredible amount of emphasis on strategy and timing, and once you finish with the western fencing segment, you're presented with the eastern style of kendo. A very highly recommended title to try at least once, or more if you're a fencer and/or interested in the art of the sword!

Battle K Road
Image

When I first played this game, I thought the emulation was busted. It was so slow, I had flashbacks of falling asleep while playing the original Street Fighter II on my SNES.. But I gave it a chance, and now I love it. Just as Great Swordsman was for the sport of fencing, Battle K Road is less Street Fighter, and more honest to the sport of martial arts, (aside from the karate bear, of course..)

Image

It's slow gameplay gives you the chance to think and anticipate your opponent's attack and act accordingly. There aren't really any combos, aside from a few one-two jab-strike sequences, so you're only chance of making it past the first 3 opponents is to think ahead of your opponent and actually out-fight them. Best two of three format, with mid-round knockdowns carry the flow of the matches nicely. If you can get past the slow pacing of the fighting engine, you'll find a great fighter from Psikyo..

Haven't played much in the way of MAME myself, but I've been toying around with the idea of building a MAME cabinet so I'm going to be keeping my eye on this thread. When I actually go through and play some games I'll be sure to post here if I'm pleasantly surprised by any of them.

Its like RC Proam or Micro Machines, but for the arcade
