This is the third Arab country in a week for this to happen to.

The gov't shoots protesters, and then shuts down the internet and land and mobile phone communications to restrict the flow of information. Total tyranny going on there. That is complete dictatorship. Then, to top it all off, the US government's Obama administration actually supports the Egyptian government and defends their actions (source). The people of Egypt need to overthrow the gov't and take control of their country; with no outside interference from other countries. Let them control their own destiny.

Good thing we spend our time screaming about civility when politicians use words like "take aim" and "fight". True political turmoil and violence is certainly something to behold.

As far taking sides, we should stay out it. It is not our country nor our problems.

If we have embassy's there (which we do) unfortunately our gov't thinks it IS our problem.

It's obviously not as much the U.S.'s problem as it is Egypt's or the Middle East's, but, like the rest of the world, we do have a stake in how things develop...

The problem comes when the US "has a stake" in protecting a US friendly dictator at the expense of the people. The US has a history of not only protecting US friendly dictators, but even overthrowing democratically elected governments in order to install friendly dictators. We've been bitten by this enough times (e.g. Iran), that you'd think we'd have learned our lesson. The best thing the US can do is to stay the fuck out of it.

I think the U.S. has more to gain than to lose if Tunisia and Egypt overthrow their governments. More countries successfully transitioning to more democratic systems of government aids democracy's cause in Iran more than any sanctions, which often do hurt the people more than the government, ever could.

Yeah, but the biggest problem is that when revolutions happen and "the people" want to take over, they typically end up with some radical regime that is often worse than what they had before. I'm not saying sticking with a dictator is better, just that as usual there are no good options in many of these countries.

I say we cut off all foreign aid tomorrow and let the chips fall where they may. We need the money to solve our own economic woes anyway.
