So I just discovered this show and after watching the first 8 episodes I have to ask:
Does anyone else see some of their own worst traits represented in this show? Or is that just me?
The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yes, but also some good traits as well. This is my absolute favorite show and has been since season 1. Unlike most of the garbage on tv, this show is genuinely funny.
Most importantly though is how did you just find out about this show?

I'm sorry but even though I like this show (even if it has ended up being an one trick pony (a pony named Sheldon)), it really annoys me the stereotypical portrayal of nerds as people who have problem talking to women. As a guy studying computers in a Uni class with many chicks, most "geeks" don't really have a problem hitting on women, even though we do have a couple of freaks.

Re: The Big Bang Theory
I finally decided to watch an episode maybe 4 shows into season 1. This was after about 5 different people at my work said Sheldon looked and reminded them of me. (I heard it yet again this week from a friend on Facebook.)
I watched the show and thought it was hilarious. And I do see plenty of similarities between myself and Sheldon. (We do look a little alike, and have a TON of similar interests. It's strange to see some of my mannerisms on a TV character. I am far from the social outcast that he is, and I'm no physicist.)
My oldest daughter has been trying to convince me to shave my beard and go as Sheldon for several Halloweens now. This is one of the only shows that our family really enjoys together.
The stereotypes don't bother me. I like how the writers seem to really understand nerd culture.

As a science teacher, comic collector, and a retro game player I don't mind the sterotypes in the show.ZeroAX wrote:I'm sorry but even though I like this show (even if it has ended up being an one trick pony (a pony named Sheldon)), it really annoys me the stereotypical portrayal of nerds as people who have problem talking to women. I have only seen a handful of episodes, but think that the portrayal of the "nerds" are twofold. I think they do the standard social jokes for the masses, but there are plenty of jokes that are aimed for the people who relate to the characters that go over the masses heads.

I have been watching since the pilot, and it is still one of my favorites
Re: The Big Bang Theory
The IT Crowd is way better. Actually, I've never seen The Big Bang Theory, so I can't compare.

I think its one of the best shows currently on TV, Sheldon makes the show for me.

Re: The Big Bang Theory
Sheldon is an overused, ridiculous character who is too relied on to carry the show to me. That said, I still enjoy the show well enough.RBT wrote:I think its one of the best shows currently on TV, Sheldon makes the show for me.
