random: how many games do you estimate that you've "beaten"?

Post by geozeldadude »

i was just looking over the games i played in 2010, and i'm building up a pretty respectable list of games i've "beaten", i.e. finished the main quest or gotten a pretty decent high score in games that don't have endings. i'm a compulsive list keeper, so i have more than 175 accounted for and am roughly estimating the actual # of games i've beaten to be in the 200's. just wondering if anyone else has ever tried to estimate his/her own number.

in terms of division, a lot of these are portable and NES games which probably inflate my numbers a bit since they probably tend to be a bit shorter than the average console game. also, i'm not a big fan of RPGs, so my number would be a bit higher than someone who did play a lot of them.

My backloggery tells me I've beaten 268 games. Taking into account games I don't own, I'd probably add about 20 or 30 to that for the total amount of games I've beaten.

I don't count getting a high score as beating a game though. High score games just cant be beaten imo.

My records indicate that I've beaten 263 individual games, which is to say I've completed the main storyline and watched the credits scroll. I agree with alienjesus in that I don't count games which are "unbeatable" such as Wii Sports, Clubhouse Games or Tetris. I also don't generally count rerelease collections such as Super Mario All-Stars or Sonic Mega Collection as beatable games. Then there are probably somewhere between 30-40 games I either no longer own, beat in arcades, or completed at friends houses. So I bet I've beat somewhere over 300 games all told.

There's probably another 150 or so games which I've played to my personal satisfaction because they are too difficult or unreasonable to complete. Examples of which include Marble Madness, Echochrome, and Pac-Man.

I am currently trying to beat every game on the "Best Videogames of All Time" lists published by Electronic Gaming Monthly in issues 100, 150, and 200, and I hope to start a thread about after I finish the three games I am working on right now (Military Madness, Return Fire, and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay). For the purposes of checking a game off of my list, I consider it "beaten" if I play through it on normal difficulty or - for games without a proper ending - if I play through all of the boards and obtain a score in excess of the default high score.

I am am mostly through each of those lists, and I have "beaten" countless games that are not on the lists. Accordingly, I estimate that I have "beaten" several hundred games. I have been playing regularly since 1987, however; so, I am not sure that is much of an accomplishment. Moreover, I do not have the time to play like I used to when I was younger; so the rate at which I "beat" games today has slowed down a lot. In any event, I really should go through my collection sometime and figure out how many games I have actually "beaten". (If I do, I will be sure to update my post with an exact number.)

EDIT: Sorry. Double post. Anyway, great thread. I am interested in seeing the count for some of the other members.

I'd like to see the list of games, I wanna know how many I've played. Any chance you're patient enough to type it up?

Thanks for this. I was mainly referring to the EGM lists though, mainly because I want to play non-nintendo stuff too. I've played a lot of good games on Nintendo systems, and not so many on others.
