Blu-Ray Disc Question

Post by Snickerd00dle »

I just picked up a copy of Akira on Blu-Ray and it has some pretty gnarly scratches, the only issue is that I can not test out this disc because my blu ray player is in chicago- the scratches don't look deep, but it is pretty hard to scratch up one of those discs? So my question is does any one have experience with scratched blu-ray discs? Are they more or less sensitive than regular dvds?

Blu Ray's are pretty scratch resistant. But if the scratch is big enough, it will cause problems. But they are waaaay stronger than DVDs and CDs though.

I saw a disc with a crack in it that played fine. Also saw a disc with some scuffs that didn't play at all. You never know. The discs are pretty tough though.
I just want to separate the cereal from the mouse mask.

I will say that while BRs are harder to scratch, they also appear to suffer more from them.

Light scratches can total make a BR fubar.

that is what I have heard too, I am going to try and test it out tomorrow at a friends house, the only issues is that I don't have time to watch the whole movie, so I will have to do a chapter select, and just hope for the best! I will let you guys know how it turns out, I will be able to return it if it doesn't work, but this is a movie I really wanted to have on Blu Ray :(

Data on a Bluray disc is more tightly packed, so any scratch could potentially "take out" comparatively more data than a CD or DVD. As with any optical disc, it is BETTER if the scratch's trajectory is from center ---> outward.

due to that protective coating blu rays are nearly impossible to scratch. But if they are the data is almost certainly corrupted. BD discs have to store data 1mm below the surface. While DVDs and CDs are more like 7mm. Just about any scratch is 1mm deep. So I would say you're BD is almost certainly shot.
