Saturn Gameshark

Post by BurningDoom »

I know the Action Replay for Saturn will allow you to play Japanese Games on your U.S. Saturn. However, I have a Gameshark. I've always thought that Gameshark and Action Replay were the same thing, but with different names for different areas.

So I'm wondering if my Gameshark will allow me to play Japanese games on my U.S. system? Anyone know?

I've heard of this too!

I have a gameshark as well, but do all of them do this or certain gameshark models?

but what are the codes to do this? or is it automatically done when you insert the JP game?

I believe they're using the same hardware internally, but GS has a custom version of the software. I don't know if that version has the region bypass enabled or not.

I've used my GameShark as a cheat device and memory card, but I don't recall if it has a region select option. I can fire it up this weekend and take a look.

They're not the same. The Gameshark's connector is twice as thick as the AR's connector, at least on mine it is. That's why you always hear people saying not to use Gameshark as the connector will wear out your Saturn's cart slot.

Indeed, don't use the Gameshark so you don't mess up your cart slot. Get an Action Replay and you're set.

FYI: I checked into it just today, my Saturn GameShark does not have a region select option.

I don't think the Action Replay does either. From what I've read about it, you just stick the game in the Saturn, and on the menu screen you simply choose "Start Game Without Codes" and it boots up the game bypassing the Sega Saturn Logo screen (with the shattered glass sound).

That's why I was wondering. I was hoping someone with a U.S. Saturn, Japanese Game, and a Gameshark might try that out for me. Then I'd know if I could by X-Men vs. Street Fighter without getting the Action Replay or not.

As others have mentioned the Gameshark is rough on the Saturns cartridge slot but here's how you play imports with it. Have your import disc in the Saturn and get to the Start game without cheats screen. Hold X,Y,Z and press start.
