Best way to play Majora's Mask?

Post by Hateshinai »

I finally decided that the time has come to play Majora's Mask seeing that I've completed every other Nintendo Zelda game (except Zelda 2). However I'm not sure which is the best way to play it:
1. N64. Ups: the original way to play, perfect sounds, etc. Downs: muddy visuals, even on my CRT.
2. Gamecube - Collector's Edition. Ups: clearer visuals. Downs: can crash, sounds not 100% accurate, slow down.
3. PC with emulation. Ups: clearest visuals, save states, I can use an N64 pad. Downs: possible bugs, no rumble, save states.
4. Wait until Nintendo release the 3DS and a port of the game. :D

For now I'm tempted to play on the N64 despite the less than stellar video quality since I've read quite a few bad things about the GC version.
What do you guys think?
Mostly harmless

Don't hold your breath.
Although, it might happen but I wouldn't expect it to happen real soon.

Assuming you dont have a Wii. The VC version is supposedly much less buggy than the gamecube, but can be played at 480p with component cables.

If not, I'd personally go for N64. With something like Majora's Mask, I would get so absorbed in the game world that I'd forget about the graphics quality. The controls work much better on N64 than on any other platform anyhow.

Third vote for the N64 version. I had the GC one and eventually bought an Expansion Pack and an N64 copy because it played better. Plus I prefer the N64 controller to the Gamecube one for this and OOT since I like using the C-buttons more than the C-stick.

But yeah, I'd say the VC version is a good second best; then the GC one. Plus the N64 version and VC versions are cheaper (well, assuming you have the expansion pack; though I got mine for 10 bucks and the game for 20 so it's still cheaper).

I found this to be true when I played Paper Mario 64 after playing Thousand Year Door. The graphics were a bit of a shock at first but after 15-30 minutes, I forgot about it.

Like the OP, I have multiple versions (N64, Gamecube, and the Wii VC). I've played the Wii VC version for a bit but I think I will do the N64 version. Mainly because I have it hooked up to the smaller TV and it's in the basement.

I played through it a while back on the cube collectors edition and I didnt have a single freeze up. But maybe I was just lucky. I also played it again when it came out on VC, and obviously if that's an option for you, that is the way to go for sure.

I read that there is some frame rate issues on the Gamecube version.

I would just play it on the N64.

i never ended up finishing this but i think the original way to play it on the n64 is the best way to go, you'll want that rumble pack.

If you can't afford the GC version, then get the VC version, and use a GC controller, or an N64-to-GC adapter for the game.

The GC version locked up on me, right when I was about to save and quit. So.... I would do the N64 version.
