I've heard about the extremely easy way to mod US SNES to play SFC games.
I removed the plastic tabs and everything was just fine – all my SFC games played like a dream, also those with special chips. Until I bought ONE japanese game (no special chip in it) – everytime I try to play it on my modded US SNES the opening jingle seems to be like cut off in the beginning (and it’s not the stereo/mono issue) and sometimes the game restes itself or freezes during the gameplay. I was pissed but I came up with the idea to play it through the Pro Action Replay (with no codes) and…the game seems to be working just perfect – the whole jingle is there, the game didn’t reset itself not one time (until this moment I made few longplays of it playing through PAR). Oh, and all my other SFC and SNES games work good on my US SNES – no reseting or freezing.
My question: Have You ever had something like this and/or can You explain to me what is the matter in this case?
Modded US SNES misbehaves with a SFC game...
Re: Modded US SNES misbehaves with a SFC game...
I had a Zelda II cart do that on my NES with a Game Genie.damejro wrote:My question: Have You ever had something like this and/or can You explain to me what is the matter in this case?
I'm guessing the cartridge could just use a really good cleaning.
Is there some silly rumour floating around that SFC games with special chips won't play on an SNES? I'm guessing it comes from a few idiots on forums who say things they really have no clue about......all my SFC games played like a dream, also those with special chips...

I don't know who spreads those rumors about those SFC games with chips but I know they work well, that's for sure
The reason I mentioned it is that the forementioned game is Rendering Ranger R2...
I wasn't quite sure if such graphics can be displayed without any additional chips but I checked it and R2 doesn't seem to have any of those. And, I'm sure You understand me, when You buy something of R2's caliber You surely want it to work flawlessly
Really good cleaning, You say? Ok, I'll do my best and hope for the best
It's not that playing through PAR makes me feel uncomfortable but thinking that my R2 is "crippled" in any way surely does

Like Breetai said, the only time I have had a SFC game not work on my modded SNES was when it, or the console, was dirty.

The SFami and US SNES are the same inside except for the setting on the RF module that affects the channel output. So yeah, what everyone else said.

There might be because this isn't the first time it was brought up recently.Breetai wrote:Is there some silly rumour floating around that SFC games with special chips won't play on an SNES?
Sounds to me like that cart just needs to be cleaned. The reason why it might seem to work fine with the PAR is because maybe the female connector on the PAR is making better contact with the problem cart than you system is.damejro wrote:can You explain to me what is the matter in this case?
Clean the cart contacts real good, and clean the system cart connector too.

I know, I've seen a few people actually telling others this. It's annoying.Ziggy587 wrote:There might be because this isn't the first time it was brought up recently.Breetai wrote:Is there some silly rumour floating around that SFC games with special chips won't play on an SNES?
I blame David Medina, that little bastard monkey.

Thank You for all suggestions, I will get to the cleaning as soon as I get back home.
And do You think that opening the cartridge case and cleaning the PCB itself besides the connectors would help, too? Or is there no point in doing that?

If something got into the cart like soda that could eat at the metal and damage it, yes. Otherwise no, you just need to get the edge contacts cleandamejro wrote: And do You think that opening the cartridge case and cleaning the PCB itself besides the connectors would help, too? However, opening the cart will allow you to clean the pins a little easier/better. This is sometimes necessary if the pins are extremely dirty or corroded.
