I'm toying with the idea of picking up an xbox 360 console. I want to avoid RROD so I think I want to stick with a Jasper model or the new slim.
Is this good advice? Or are there other models that I should consider?
I believe Walmart will have the 250GB slim on sale for $299 with a $75 gift card.

Is having a JTAG model of Jasper worth it? I understand that you can't use xbox live because it's modded. I do want to play with an old school friend in another state so unmodded would be the only option for live.
Are you able to install games to the hard drive so that you don't need to have the disc? Or is that only with a JTAG model? I understand that JTAG is only available for consoles manufactured before summer 2009 or thereabout.
Any other advice for a 360 noob? Thanks!

I'd stick with a slim. Even the Jasper model is known to get the RROD though its not nearly as frequent as the older models.

Hell i was walking in target the other day and the new slim had a red ring or red circle. The other consoles were up and running.

Probably the video cable was unplugged, those units are much more resilient to getting the RROD
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

From what I've read they removed the RROD light feature from the slim console, I assume it wasn't poular feature. I don't know if it still does it when the video cables unplugged though.

I was mulling the advantages of JTAG but updated my dashboard anyway. Laptops can be hooked easily to TVs and provide more functionality than a console ever would.
When installing DVDs to HDD/USB you have to have the disc in the tray, but it's only checked at boot time. JTAGs I believe can access the ISOs directly bypassing the drive check mechanism altogether, but I haven't the foggiest about updating the dashboard to support newer games.

Went with the jasper for my son and it barely gets hot even after long sessions. It is pretty quiet as well.
No experience at all with Jtag or the slim though.

JTAG is worth it - if you don't mind losing XBOX Live
I just got a Falcon JTAG and I'm loving it. I bought it pre-Jtagged on the xbox-scene forums. I don't really care about playing online so losing that feature doesn't bother me. I really got it to play all the awesome Japanese shmups.
A good thing about the JTAG is you can monitor the internal temperatures and also adjust the fans to run faster than stock, keeping the console cooler and therefore less likely to RROD.
Also there are the obvious benefits of a region free console, running games straight off the HDD - no disk required, and being able to install larger HDDs - I've got a 320gb. There are also emulators for older systems, which is a nice bonus.

I don't think you can JTAG Jaspers, the firmware required for jtag is lower than the one the retail boxes have. Unless later firmwares have been exploited. I don't know. Anyone know any more info?
I have a jasper elite and I've played 4 straight hours of Bad Company 2 without it getting hot. Left it on downloading demos/patches over night and woke up in the morning and it was still completely cold. You would have to be doing something spectacularly wrong for it to RROD.

So here we are in 2014. My nephew brought his Slim down this weekend and the price seems low enough for me to try one. Has there been any RROD or major flaws with the Slims yet?
