Any MAME Experts To Help With Guides?

Post by racketboy »

I'd like to start on a series of guides for all things MAME.
While I've been using MAME for a number of years, I only know some of the basics of the MAME universe, so I was hoping to team up with someone (or a couple people) to put together some resources for newbies and those looking to boost their knowledge.

I know one that that has baffled me most is what flavor of MAME is best for me on the PC. There are so many different versions that have their own little special features, its hard to keep up.

I think it would also be cool to come up with certain groups/eras of games and what kind of hardware specs you need to run them. This is handy for people that may have access to an older box that would like to turn into a dedicated emulation machine.

And of course, it would be nice to cover MAME on a variety of platforms like Windows, Mac, Linux, Dreamcast, XBox, GP2X, PSP, and whatever else there is.

I think you can see where I'm going with this.

If you would like to help out, please let me know.
Also if you have ideas of other things that might be helpful in this area, let me know!

I think many people have trouble just getting mame set up with all the necessary files and roms. While its dangerous to start handing out roms, we can at least direct them to search for a torrent on their own. I'll look around the web to see what resources are already available in terms of newbie guides. It would be cool just to link to those and create a guide where there is a specific need.

Well, like I said, I actually need a guide for the different MAME versions.
There are so many and nobody can seem to tell me what each is for.

You know you are in trouble when the admin has to bump a thread....

I usually use Mame32 or Mame32FX. Those both seem to be kept very up-to-date. Actually, more often that not I'm just using Mame32.

MAME is changing so damn fast. I think SDLMAME is the best one out there right now unless you are gaga about video effects. Maybe I can cover just SDLMAME once I have figured it all out. I'm definately becoming more knowledgeable with the whole CPS3 addition.

A lot of the MAME variations are unimportant. Usually someone has a single feature or purpose in mind that they don't think the main MAME build addresses well enough so they fork the code. It also means the weird builds are more likely to fall out of step with the main code base. MAME32 is the best MAME version to write a guide for because it is the most likely to be kept up to date and is fully functional within Windows. It also has a decent feature set without catering to any one function, save playing MAME games on your Windows machine.

If you wish, I can assist with the Linux documentation.
