How I stopped studying and learnt to love triplehead setups

Post by Erik_Twice »

It has been kind of shameful for me to have close to one thousand posts and not a single picture of my game room.

So, before you appear at my doorstep to steal all my games I decided to fight lazyness for a second and post some pictures for all of you to see!

You may be surprised to find that I do not actually have many games. I only started collecting recently and I'm very picky about what I play. The fact that I can't play any consoles right now also matters, since I still have games to beat.

My triplehead setup. I got my screens for 40 euro each and now I can't go back to a single screen. I just can do so many things that I couldn't:

You know you play too much Beatmania when the controller is more important to you than a keyboard. You can see how much my mouse sucks compared to the mousepad.Image

Why have only 6 plugs when you can have like 14?

My loose Megadrive games and some old PC games. If you wonder why I have stuff like Rambo 3, I got them for free with the good games.

A-train is missing the disks, inside the boxes I also have Railroad Tycoon 2 , Theme Park World and Simcity 3000. I don't have boxes because my mother threw them out =/
Image

GBA and Dreamcast games. Pokemon Trading cards too! The Pokémon Red box actually has other Pokémon games in it, the boxes met the same fate as the PC ones =/
Image

I actually like Castelian even if most think it's crap. My cousin lost the Crackout box and a boxed Super Spy Hunter before giving the games to me =/

First part of my PC collection:

Second Part and some PS2 games. ICO FTW:

PS2 and Wii games

I can't play my consoles because I can't put them in my living room =/ I need some kind of small screen so I can play in my room.

Did I mention I have no Dremcast?

I love the hinges of the DS. And if you think the console to the right is any better: The touchscreen doesn't work
Image

Now some pixel art! It was incredibly easy to do and took me less than 10 minutes. Just look for some sprites on the internet and copy them with Lego blocks:

I can only post two pictures for now, stay connected!

Neither can I, it is really awesome in FPS games, much more immersive.

Nice setup man, can't wait to see the rest of your collection.

It's OpenTTD, those grey things are overhead wires for railroads

And yes, they are. Everything becomes much more inmersive with this setup. Unfortunatedly jsut after getting the screens a TF2 update broke the compatibility with it

I ran a dual monitor setup for a while, but nixed the second monitor when I ran out of room and couldn't think of much use for it.

I actually have two extra monitors so I could try for a triplehead if I really wanted, but I don't have the desk space now.

That triple screen setup looks pretty sick, I'd love to play some roller coaster tycoon on that bad boy myself 8)

I use double head setups at work and home, I always found the triple head just a little much for what I do. It was always great for gaming, give Quake 3 a go with the fov set to 270. Just dont try Descent that way.

If I get the new job that I am desperately trying to get, I will be building a four to seven head setup - with atleast one vertical 32 inch tv for text and toolbars

Haha, riding the rollercoasters must be amazing!

@fastbilly 1

You are kind of right, while a second screen adds a lot a third one doesn't add so much outside of gaming. I still find it handy, I keep MSN and that stuff on that screen so I can just gaze the screen, without moving the mouse.

Is Descent that bad on triplehead? I heard that some people got space sickness by playing that game on a single screen so I can see it being bad for some haha.

Now you are tempting me =D

When I last did a triple head setup for more than a few days I left up aim, irc, icq, msn, and Music Match Jukebox (oh that dates when I did that). Since all of my chatting friends are now on Gtalk, I just leave up gmail in a tab. And since I pay for pandora, that runs in another tab. So right now I really dont need the setup. Soon I might be getting a promotions job which would behoove me to be able to track alot of things at once. So setting up a five monitor setup with the two end ones being vertical might be the best situation for me. Its funny my oldman said that playing games growing up would never get me anywhere, now Ill be working with him in his industry just at a pace that the rest of the people in his industry cant come close to since I dont work like they do - I would like to thank alot of splitscreen multiplayer. And I will probably spend the next few hours drafting out how I want to do this...

And yeah, Descent can be really bad on multiple monitors. Even just on a widescreen one. It takes a long time to get use to it, and it helps to do it in the dark. If you can remove the top of the cockpit from the hud itll be easier. For years I wanted to create pods that would have a 32 inch widescreen tv and surround sound with the option of swapping out the controls from racing to flying to fps on the fly, but when I tried to play descent that way, well I put that dream on hold.

Finding games that work well on multiple monitors can be a pain. Realtimesoft has a gallery of multiple monitor setups:
http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/gallery.asp
If you ever decide to go with more than three monitors, they make a product called Ultramon that will put the startmenu bar on each monitor - or stretch it across them. There is a free demo that is worth playing with. Not useful for two monitors, really useful for six+.

My home office right now has three monitors setup, but spread over two pcs. I use to have it setup with a kvm to have dual monitors on both boxes, but then I downgraded the always on box to an atom based pc and it only has a single vga port.
