What is the Best PSP Model for Emulation/Homebrew

Post by racketboy »

So if I wanted to get a PSP mainly for emulation and homebrew (and maybe some Playstation Mini games or whatever those are...), what model should I get?
Price really isn't a concern.

Mostly considering ease of setup and good controls/screen

the "Phat" PSP's are the easiest to mod (or were anyway). If you need a Pandora's Battery I might know someone who has one.

If you hack your PSP are you still able to get on the store and buy stuff for it? I was under the impression you couldn't because of the firmware.

I have both (1000 & 2000). They have their plusses and minuses. If I had to choose one, I would go with the slim 2000.

Strictly my two cents:

Go with a PSPgo. I originally bought one thinking it was unmoddable, but my god, they've come a long way in the modding community. With the PSPgo, you can easily launch homebrew now, and with the added benefit of TV out and bluetooth, it's a definite win for me.

I currently have a Genesis and GBA emulator running on my PSPgo, hooked to my 46" tv, and playing on it with a Dualshock 3. Hard to say that I don't regret buying it now :)

Yes! as of right now, you are able to launch homebrew on a unmodded system by simply copying a moddified save file for a specific game to your PSP and booting that said game. The firmware on the PSP is still stock, therefore, you can buy games still of the PSN.

I do that still to this day :)

The 1001 models are the easiest. I did mine 2 years back and have every emulator running great. NES, SNES, NEOGEO, CPS1 and 2, SMS, Genesis, Cave, PS1 games as well as others. I havent used it in a while. The Pandora Battery works as a regular battery as well.

How many games and ROMS you want depends on how many Memory Sticks youre willing to get.

Theres a program called Magic Memory Stick Maker I used to creat the memory stick to hack the PSP and put CFW 5.33

Do a search for Magic Memory Stick Maker here:
http://dl.qj.net/

Also you can get the emulators there as well. Make sure they are for whatever PSP you have whether it be the phat or the slim model.

Another good site:

Theres a whole bunch of other apps available. I just never kept looking into it. I need to pick up more Memory Sticks (Memory Stick Pro Duo is what I use). Ive got 2 8gb and 2 of the 4g sticks.

Here is for backing up your PSP games:
http://pspiso.com/

You can play PSP games off the memory sticks, however you must make that change in the recovery mode. I think the function is called "no umd" or something.

I own both the PSP-1000 and 2000 Slim systems and I would go with PSP-2000 Slim. The 1000 is easiest to mod firmware but Slim is fairly easy as well plus it has a better LCD screen. 8)

I've only had experience with a 1000 and 2000 so I can't comment on the 3000 and Go, but between the 1000 and 2000, I'd go with the 2000 due to it having a better d-pad and screen.

Also, from what I remember the battery on the 2000 can be charged with a usb cable, and you can't do that on the 1000.

That's true but I find that USB charging to be painfully slow such that I never use it. I just use the regular charger.
