so i got a DS lite. They were 89 bucks at target and i figure at that price its worth getting one to test it out and i can just throw an XL on my amazon wish list =P that way i have backwards compatibility fo the GBA games i may want to get, and i have a smaller one my niece can play with. This brings me to a question though. Since there will be a 4 year old using it from time to tim, im thinking i may want to put a screen protector on this thing. I did some searching online and i guess the official nintendo ones SUCK. I see a lot of people complaining about most of them. I went to all the local game stores and found 3 brands with the 'official' seal of nintendo on them
these are the manufacturers i found that were official:
BD&A ( i think this is the one i heard most people complainigna bout online)
Power A
PDP
Hori (online, i didn't see any in the brick and motor stores)
Kind of strange there is such a wide variety. It makes me concered that some of the earlier ones were junk or something. which one should i get? Which are the best? I hear some actually use glue or something on them o_O which is a terrible idea. Unfortunatly none of the packaging specifies what they use. I think Hori is the best from what i've read but i also saw several bad reviews on amazon for them. With complaints ranging from they hurt sensitiviy, to they dont cover the screen all the way, or even one about it having a blue tint o_O
Im wondering if Hori USA and hori Japan are 2 different products? if i go for hori are the Japanese ones better?
I was just hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. This is for the DS lite btw, not the DS I
Oh, and side question about the stylus. I notice some have a white tip. The ones that came with my lite are a solid black. Is there any difference between them? I was under the impression that the stylus tip is supposed to retract a bit when you push down on it, but mine do not. Is that normal? is it supposed to just be a solid stiff piece of plastic? I dont see much info on the stylus variants online.
Hopefully someone can point me to a good screen protector that wont jack up the system or kill sensitivity. My niece wants to play the nintendogs game i got her but i dont want her mashing on the screen without a guard

Re: DS lite screen protector question, and stylus
Hi.
About the stylus, the official one that comes with the DS Lite does not retract, and I think most replacement / 3rd party ones don't either. I do not think that retractable ones would work well but who knows.
As for screen protectors, I have not tried different brands. I just buy some from dealextreme (they are rather cheap). Even if they are probably not the best, they are decent quality. You should be prepared to see the protector itself get really scratched (really!) to the point that after some months you will have trouble playing in the sunlight due to the reflection of the scratches messing up the image. The screen itself would not get nearly as scratched, but when it would get a scratch you would possibly feel bad about it, and you can easily swap the protectors.
Ivo.

Re: DS lite screen protector question, and stylus
Hori is a company like Capcom and other JP companies, so they will have US and JP branches of operation.
With Hori, you are getting a quality product, and they also make retractable stylus, which I also have bought. But be aware that retractable stylus are venerable to physical stress - you shouldn't extend your stylus every time you play a game, as it will cause stress marks at the "stop point." I think Target does carry Hori products, and be aware of sellers on Amazon selling fakes.
In my experience, with the Hori screen protector, there was no loss of touch screen reaction, and it really is just a thin plastic film that you apply on, without the need for glue to stick on, and you can re-apply it to minimize air bubbles.

Re: DS lite screen protector question, and stylus
from googling around it seems a lot of people do laud the Hori, as Skyknight seems to like it. The thing is when i looked at amazon it had quite a few 1's and poor reviews! That doesn't really jive with what i heard. One guy even says its blue tinted.
The amazon ones are definitely the US ones though. Im wondering if theres any difference between the US protectors, and the JP ones. It seems there is a US and JP branch, but the question is whether they both provide the exact same product. If i recall correctly i remember hearing that some of the US fighting joysticks were of inferior quality to the JP ones, so im curious if we got a cheaper/worse version in the US? I did find the Japanese one on playasia
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-b7- ... -196x.html
but id rather just get the US one since its cheaper if its the exact same thing.. plus i can read the instructions =P
Is Ivo right about it getting scratched? I thought the point of these things was to prevent scratches. Im surprised they would get messed up over time. Honestly i wouldn't even bother if it wasn't for the 4 year old playing it. Im really curious if anyones used or heard anything about the other brands i mentioned. The main thing i dont want is glue on it! i hear some of them have a sticky side that adheres to the screen. That just sounds terrible to me, but the packaging didn't indciate if it was static or glue on any of the ones i looked at =(
Good to know that the stylus's aren't suposed to retract. BTW by tretract i meant just the tip would bob down a bit when you pressed on it. Not click back like a pen.

Well the point of the screen protector is to protect the screen from scratches, the screen protector takes all the damage.

Don't forget there are knockoff (counterfeits) Hori products. These are the ones you find on DealExtreme and other Chinese websites. They're much cheaper and still work decently.
Re: DS lite screen protector question, and stylus
Are skin protectors removable when scratched?
I bought some for my family's cell phones. Been on a while now and look great. I realize now maybe damage the touch screen if I ever do have to change them. Kinda defeats the whole point of having that shield.

You can remove them easily and apply new ones - without damaging the screen.

Good to know, thanks. I'll change them only if really badly scratched. That clear label appears to be on there like a Blockbuster DVD rental shield.Ivo wrote:You can remove them easily and apply new ones - without damaging the screen.
