Good access to torrents i think is the main reason especially if most of the shows you watch are downloaded.

High speed Internet connections are deadly for that. I currently have 4TB of storage and it's filling up fast. I am a data pack rat.
But it's never good to go higher than 75~80% of capacity AFAIK.

Mine is mostly filled with full sets of classic video games. With all the CD based consoles it's easy to fill 2TB. It's so much nicer to just have everything and burn an image when I need it than to go looking for an image of a particular game.

There's quite a bit of progress being made on complete collections of the various DVD based consoles. So there's even good reason to keep a large HDD array.

I used to keep everything I downloaded, but then I realized there was no way I would ever use most of what I download. Now I only download stuff I plan on using immediately (aside from music). The only Steam games I have installed are the ones I'm currently playing. Feels better this way, if I just pack stuff into the HD, I feel that I'm not doing anything; kinda like a giant backlog.

How do people not?

A lot of games now are 10-15 GB. The space gets used up real fast when you're a collector. And if your machine is a multimedia machine for games, music, movies, pictures, etc. then it will fill even faster. I've got 75 GB in music, 2 GB in pictures, and 185 GB for games. The only reason I don't use up more is because my hard drive isn't big enough.

It's kind of funny though. I remember when my friend first got a 1 GB hard drive. We had never heard the term Gigabyte before. It seemed so big back then. I'm sure the same will happen with the terrabyte in time though.

Burning the installs to reliable CDRs and DVDRs will prolong the filled drive agony.
