How to softmod an original Xbox - anyone got an easy guide?

Post by bacteria »

Had a look on YouTube for some info on an easy way to softmod an original Xbox, but it all looked rather bloated and a hassle.

Is there an easy way to do it, reliable and permanent? I want to use my Xbox for MAME; as well as Xbox titles.

Also, when I go around car boot sales I see quite a few old Xboxes, what do I look for (if it's a clear cased Xbox of course so you can see the board through) to see if it has been modchipped - might be worth getting one if can cheaply.

The most comprehensive one that I found was the one over on the SA forums. I used an older version of this guide to softmod mine a long time ago.

<edit> crap, it looks like he took his wiki page offline. Its all in the old thread if you have the forums archive upgrade (I don't).

I was gonna say, Bac, why are you looking to softmod over using a chip? You know how to solder, so you could easily put a chip in yourself. I've compared the pros and cons, and I think a chip is the better way to go.

I contacted vlame here on the forums and rented his softmod kit. I'm sure he would have all kinds of knowledge to share on this subject.

Personally, I would love to see a dumbed-down FTP-to-Xbox tutorial. I did lots of googling and thread-searching after the softmod, and most of the results were beyond my limited technological comprehension. I ended up paying some guy $15 to do it for me, and about 1/4 of the SNES roms didn't work.

I found the easiest way to do it was with Softmod Installer Deluxe. The linked manual is pretty comprehensive.

I'd prefer a modchip Ziggy, however they don't appear available anywhere. If I did get a modchipped Xbox, fine, however looked at the manual and it is hard to follow and a lot of hassle. I don't think i'll bother!

I got my chip from eurasia.nu. http://www.eurasia.nu/shop/product_info ... 24d8fff9e1

Yes, modding an xbox can be a little overwhelming the first time. But if you take your time and do a lot of research, it's not that hard.

One tip is that the ftp server that comes with Evox (Evolution X) sucks. It's best to get XBMC or UnleashX immediately installed. Once you have a good ftp server running, it's trivial to use Filezilla to transfer your stuff over.

Modchip.ca has them...

They're usually a little more expensive then the competition, but their service is great. I've ordered from them 3 times and I've been very pleased each time.

I'd just put the exploit on an xbox memory card, since we're both in the same country it wouldn't be an issue just a couple of quid for postage. The only problem is, I don't have my xbox with me. It's packed up in storage at my mother's house. It could be several weeks before I even have access to it.
