Dead Sega CD (won't power up) *SOLVED*

Post by christoph »

Model 2 Sega CD:
Image

I've hooked it up to a model 1 genesis or a model 2 genesis, doesnt make any difference. All power cords are tested and working. Both the model 1 genesis and model 2 genesis power up and play games perfectly when plugged into the SEGA CD. The Sega CD does not light up, power up or do anything.

Was wondering if there is any notorious things to check or any advice etc.

Thanks!

There's a green fuse that looks a little like a resistor that's probably blown.

Yeah I think I read about this before. Any links/images anyone know of to help me out with which specific fuse and where it is on the board?

It's a Pico II fuse that needs to be replaced, if you look it up on youtube there a couple step by step guides, it's how I fixed mine :)

Btw I think I still have an extra one lying around if you need it!

Previous thread. http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... =a&start=0

The fuse is mounted standing up. As I recall it's near the screw hole between the plugs and the jack that connects to the Gen. Test it for continuity and if nothing, then that's your problem, or at least the first part of it.

I bypassed mine with an automotive fuse holder that takes interchangeable tube fuses. That way if this happens again it is easy to change. :)

I'd check for a connection problem first before installing a new fuse. I had the same issue when I got mine, and it turned out that connection was the only problem. Sometimes, thats the only problem, and mine has been working just fine since I cleaned it.

Clean the Genesis contacts with q-tips dabbed in any 70% isopropyl/rubbing alcohol. Make sure you clean them gently and firmly. You want the contacts to look nice and shiny once done. (This will work in cleaning pretty much any cartridge based game, although I've heard it's not effective on DS games. Avoid blowing into them.)

Any canned air would work with dusting out the Sega CD female contacts. I used an air compressor. Never blow into them (or into any other cartridge/contact for that matter.) Your breath will corrode the contacts, causing slight but permanent damage.

That was the first thing I did. Thanks for the tips though.

Just FYI, not all Genesis expansion plugs are shiny. Some are black.
