Forgive the wierd title but i couldnt resist.
My local bowling alley just bought in a load of arcade machines which is awesome, the breakdown of them is:
-Daytona USA 2 player set up
-House of the Dead 1
-Some military light gun game looks ps2 style
-Some cowboy themed FMV game with light guns
-Time Crisis
-Some wierd more money you insert the more you get electrocuted game(not really arcade or sane)
and some others i cant remember.
However its the kids playing them and what they say which makes it awesome. Some quotes,
FMV game "Holy crap look at these graphics, its as good as my grandmas TV!"
Daytona "This handles like a real car. Its Awesome!"
Time Crisis, "Dude check out this game its like the Wii but waay better."
So its not just nostalgia talking, as strange as it seems these old machines have ques for them and everyone seems to love the games. Ill try to get some photos next time i go.

Crap. If retro gaming isn't weird I've got to find a new hobby.
We are prepared to live in the plain and die in the plain!

I don't know if this has anything to do with retro, but really one of the things that made arcade games fun. Each of those games have unique controls. Daytona has a steering wheel while the light-gun games have guns. These simply provide a more immediate interface between the player and the game. The Wii doesn't have guns, even if it provides a similar function.
Even joysticks are rare on consoles these days, which provide a dramatically different experience. And leaf joy sticks are dead.
Just my quick thought on the topic. Otherwise, its always good to see a few of these relics providing fun to people.

I strongly suspect that there are more people who like retro games than there are people who like modern games. These people unfortunately either seldom identify themselves as gamers, or get lumped together as "casual" gamers, usually derisively.
Too much of gaming culture has become focused on games that are overly complicated, too serious to be much fun for most people, and too locked into stale franchises and old ideas. A lot of people who used to be active gamers have given it up because the industry's current direction simply doesn't appeal to them. Many who don't give up gaming altogether have turned to retro gaming to meet their needs, rather than participate in "mainstream" gaming culture and consumerism. The ones who have mostly given it up still remember the old games fondly, and get excited when you talk to them about it. I don't think they're aware of the venues available for preserving and reviving video games as they once were. Basically, a lot of the population are closet retro gamers and don't know it.
Certain segments of the gaming industry are aware that they've alienated such an alarmingly large portion of their former audience, and they definitely see this as a problem. It's exactly this issue that prompted Nintendo to design the Wii, and why its library is stuffed with fun, simple, inexpensive games--many of them inspired by a "retro" game experience.

Pff. That's not overanalysis, that's just verbal diarrhea.Pulsar_t wrote:^ Overanalyzing.
Simple idea, too many words used to describe it. It's a bad habit of mine.

Retro gaming is weird until Oprah does a show about it.
