Critique my web design

Post by cabrando »

My family owns a grocery store and we're currently building a new store and they wanted me to make us a website. I've never built a site, I have messed around with php and other programming languages, but html/css is not my forte.

Looking for constructive criticism on how to make it better. Hopefully people will have different resolutions, browsers, etc. to help me out.

Right now all that's done is the home page and the weekly ad.

Coming from a retail background the first thing I'd change is the box that says "weekly ad" to something more like Weekly specials or something to that effect.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Actually, it's pretty damn good. Assuming mostly people will be coming to this site to know 1) when it's open, 2) how do I contact them and 3) what can I get the cheapest there? You've done really good.

My constructive criticism would be to add a Google Maps (or some such) How Do I Get There? and to down grade the images. It took a really long time to load on the images and the pertinent information can be displayed at probably 25% resolution. Which is just a scan of a newspaper flyer, I assume. Product and price is all you need.

Good luck. And everyone support local independent business.

I think it looks great, with an intuitive menu click bar. Nice and clean WITHOUT slow loading Java script, the biggest discourager in losing a sale. On my Safari Browser, part of the the information in black is covered. Also some boxes don't work such as the important Store Information box. Something to look at by testing with a Mac, for a wider cliental.

Very helpful site, I used it a lot for what I have done so far.

I like that idea a lot actually, hope my Dad & Grandpa agree, they have final say.

Thanks for the kind words. A Google Map is planned to go under the Store Information section when I get there. I went back and forth on what to do about the images, I'm just not sure. I wanted it to be big enough to see without having to have an extra click in there to enlarge it. Any suggestions?

Amen to your last statement

You can take a screenshot of your store in Google Maps, then crop it in MSPaint and upload it. Will load tons faster and will be smaller in size.

I actually have a Macbook, but not getting the same result as you. Here's what it looks like in Safari for me.

Unfortunately it's still being built, so no image on Google yet. I do have a rendering though that I could put on there though.

I was talking about the slow loading of the ad images. When people look I want it to be as quick for them as possible (i.e. not having to click a smaller image to get a larger one to actually be able to read it).

I'd change the background from pure white to desaturated (grayish) green. The negative space looks like a vacuum to me.
