how I almost killed my sega cd as well as audio question

Post by matacks »

Hello, today I got a sega genesis model 1 as well as a sega cd model 1 off somebody on ebay. The items came with a bunch of sega cd games as well as genesis carts, some of which have nice value and are semi collectable as well as controllers, so I was stoked!!

anyways my first order of buisness was to get the behemoth hooked up. Unfortunately for me the person from ebay shipped me a bad power brick. I noticed the power brick made a buzzing sound when I plugged it in. I haven't been using these types of old consoles in a while so I didn't take this as a cause for alarm. I plugged it in to the sega cd and nothing happened. I noticed that my genesis and sega cd wouldn't turn on. Thats when I noticed the burning smell. I had all the plugs ripped out of the back of the genesis and sega cd before the power button was turned off. Then at this moment I could see little whisps of smoke comming out from the sega cd (the one that had the bad ac adapter plugged into it).
After letting it cool down I went and took one of my spare power bricks from one of my other genesis consoles that was already in my possession. I plugged it in and to my relief the sega cd fired up and appeared to be working unscathed. It's CD tray even seems to be working correctly although it does sound a bit harsh. I wonder if I should open the console up and put some grease in the gears or something?

here is why I have a question about audio on the genesis.

I noticed the reset button on the genny that came with my ebay order does not seem to be working. The reset button is needed because its what opens the cd tray to work the sega cd. Ive thought of taking this genesis apart and cleaning around the button but I haven't tried that yet. Also this genesis has the HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS lettering.

after doing this I went and grabbed one of my other genesis consoles. I went and got my oldest genny Model 1. I know its really old because it has a EXT port on the back. When using this genny with the sega CD I thought I noticed a different sound quality. I thought a better one but i dunno if I was imagining this. However, when using the headphone out jack on this console the sound seems to be having a fading problem. The volume will rise and fade and then completely fade out. Could this mean the slide potentiometer is bad? Sometimes when I move the slide up and down the sound comes back on but its not reliable at all. I would prefer to use this console so I wondering if theres a way to fix it. I have another genesis model 1 (3 total) but this one is the newer kind that does not feature the HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS lettering above the cart slot. Ive tested this console and it has a working reset button as well as sound that is working correctly. Thankyou in advance for any feedback on the matter!!

just to clarify about the consoles I have. The first two have the HIGH DEFENITION GRAPHICS lettered on then. Out of these consoles one has the EXT port. the third newest cosole does not have the HDG lettering.

I have a number of model 1 genesis power supplies, and they all buzz intermittently when plugged in, whether the genesis is powered on or not. I hadn't thought it a problem, but I'll have to check the voltages those things put out. Scary!

It probably is a good idea to grease the gears. Use a light silicone grease, it won't harm the plastic. Check out the capacitors while you're in there, look for any bulging tops or leaking stuff.

As for the audio, if you're willing to mod your system you can tap the stereo before it gets to the headphone jack. Whether it's the potentiometer or the amplifier that should give you good audio. Of course, you should clean the pot first just to be sure it's not the problem.

Glad to hear your Sega CD still works ;)

As far as the audio question, some of the model 1s have different sound chips than others (or something) that as the years went on, Sega replaced it with crappier and crappier ones. So later Model 1s and Model 2s sound worse than a original Model 1 and what have you. I'm sure someone else could explain the technical stuff better.

The volume and reset are all right next to each other. I bet a drink or something was spilled on the Gen at some point and it has gummed up the works. It can probably be cleaned out with contract cleaner at least a little if the system is opened up and one has a go.

hmmm contact cleaner I will have to try that. Thanks for the tips and advice everybody! Lately I've just had a new problem with the cd tray on the sega cd not working right. Big surprise, well at least it worked for about five minuets after taking it out of the box. So far I completely disassembled the sega cd cleaned it up and glued afew plastic supports that were broken.

I'm trying to watch some youtube videos on how to fix the cd tray. I messed with this one black gears that moves the tray. After I got it back together it's not quite working right now. :? It's like its not detecting both the close and open switches or something. I have some figuring out to do.

Well I just stayed up past my bedtime and tried about 50 different ways of messing with the gear and trying to set the thing up so it hits one switch when is closes and the other when opens up. I can't get this thing to work right at all ut I think it can still be fixed if its just something Im missing. If anybody has experience in fixing these disk trays on the sega cd any info would be appreciated . :)
