- If you view almost any video game reviews you'll find they grade based on not what they think is fun, but rather, what they've been told a good game consists of.
If you get fun out of playing with a Game Genie, play with a Game Genie. I heard someone say the other day, "What's the point in playing if you're just going to cheat." I almost cried.
If you pop in a game and start laughing out loud for hours on end based on how bad it is, it's a good game.
Playing an easy game isn't necessarily playing a bad game. Just because you don't get frustrated every other key press doesn't make it a bad game, in fact it probably means the opposite.
Games are meant to be fun.

Games are meant to be fun.
I know it's been stated on this site repeatedly, but it's just getting worse and worse. Games are meant to be fun.
Re: Games are meant to be fun.
I think everyone here agrees with you, although in the interest of getting something related off my chest;
I'm playing through Red Faction: Guerilla and I don't know why. Yeah the destruction element is cool and all but that's all this game is, I'm doing mediocre baby-sit missions or going on suicide missions in an effort to bring a building down, constantly outnumbered and out-gunned am I doing something wrong? I've liberated 3/5 areas and died what must be 20 times, is this what this game is? constant, endless, depressing kamikaze?? The game got decent press and word of mouth was good but I don't feel there's actually anything there just a "hey, look what we can do!" tech demo. As of now it's the worst game I've played this gen. I will complete it but I know I'm wasting my time.

i have the same stance with pretty much any media. if i'm having a good time, it's good stuff. regardless of how terrible it is.

Dragon's Revenge is actually pretty fun. I like the original games more, but I DO have fun with this game. It's solid video pinball!renardqueenston wrote:and that's exactly why i love thisslowslow325 wrote:If you pop in a game and start laughing out loud for hours on end based on how bad it is, it's a good game.

i dunno about "solid", considering the ball has the tendency to just kind of warp through things and float around aimlessly. i'd say that's more a liquid quality.

On a related note, air is meant to be breathed in and out.

Let's not forget that games get way lower scores these days if they don't have an online option. Really I think we've talked about this in the gaming mags thread in the game culture sub-forum. Game reviewers are idiots. And I don't want to ever hear anyone calling them gaming journalists. Those people don't deserve the same job title as people who have covered wars, or even people who gave Spiderman 2 an average review.

I don't think video games need to be fun to be good. In fact, I think there are instances where a good game has been ruined because too much emphasis was put on making the game fun to the detriment of the storyline and atmosphere. Schindler's list is not a fun movie, but it is very good. Video games should be able to do the same. It can lack fun as long as it is still engaging.

This type of sentiment is exactly why I've turned my back on modern gaming for the most part. It just isn't fun. I play online and I get called terrible things. I play off-line and I can't help but notice how buggy the 'advanced' graphics are. Or how unnecessary half the 'features' included in the game are. Or how long the cutscenes are. Or...
At the end of the day I just go back and play Megaman 3 anyway. Why? Because it's fun.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

?? Grammatically there's nothing wrong with anything I've written, question marks are full stops too.
