Ok. Here's the deal. I'm starting to get more interested in some of these mech games (new and old) and I'm wondering which ones might suite my style best.
Even though I'm open to all possible "cool mech games," I think I'm specifically in need right now of some "really good third-person mech shooting action" that has dual analog control - similar to other popular third-person shooter games like Max Payne and Gears of War (and console FPS's) - and also features some "arcade-like action" with a possible switchable first-person view.
Some mech titles that I'm familiar with but haven't played are Virtual-On, Armored Core, Transformers (PS2), Chromehounds (360), and Mech Assault (Xbox). But again, I haven't played any of those so I have no idea if they would have the fps-like control that I'm looking for and possible alternate/switchable camera views.
The systems that I have which might apply are: PS1, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox and Xbox 360.
Thanks

I have S.L.A.I for ps2. It's more like vehicle mech combat. You roll around and dash and boost and jump and whatnot. It uses dual sticks but I haven't played much of it. My favourite mech game so far is Gungriffon blaze though. It is a super fast action packed type of game. That one plays in first person though and the controls are a bit different. You can use dual sticks but the aiming is inverted and you can't change it which throws me off. I play with the saturn like control scheme which is probably the most fun to use when you figure it out.
Re: Third-Person Mech Shooter Recommendations
Did the Zone of the Enders series use that kind of control?
Re: Third-Person Mech Shooter Recommendations
Zone Of The Enders uses more of a lock on system with most of the weapons than free hand shooting. Although you can use your basic gun for shooting enemies freehand. I would definitely give ZOE The 2nd Runner a try though. Theres a reason why it still demands a $25.00 to $30.00 price, its super fast mech action at its best. And the graphic style is cool as well. Another good one to try is Phantom Crash for Xbox. If you really want to dedicate yourself Steel Battalion is the way to go!
Re: Third-Person Mech Shooter Recommendations
I don't recall how it controls, but I yesterday I tracked down (as in figured out what game it was) a PS1 game I played years ago: Future Cop: L.A.P.D
I don't recall a whole lot, but I remember having a lot of fun with it. If I recall right, it's awesome - and it's co-op
I don't recall ever seeing it on recommendation lists. I wonder if it's a hidden gem...

The Gungriffon series would be a good one to check out.

Bulk Slash for the Saturn is easily the best mech game I have played; the graphics are phenomenal, the gameplay and controls are smooth and the soundtrack is great, too.

I'll second Zone of the Enders 2 and Bulk Slash. Both awesome
Zone of the Enders 2 has some of the most epic stages and boss fights I've ever played. Kojima at his best
