Doki Doki Panic saving issues

Post by Ziggy »

For some reason I can't save the game when playing Doki Doki Panic.

I'm not much for emulation but I recently got a PowerPak and I'm amazed with the Famicom Disk System abilities. I put three FDS games on my PowerPak: Castlevania, Metroid, and Doki Doki Panic. I've made saves in both Castlevania and Metroid, they work fine. But I can't seem to make a save for Doki Doki Panic. I can't even get it to save in an emulator.

So when you start up Doki Doki Panic it hits the title screen, plays the intro, then asks you to change sides. Once you change sides, you have the character selection screen which also shows the progress (which chapter each character is on). So I'll play through chapter 1 and warp to chapter 4 then die on purpose to save. I choose save then the game goes through the motions until I get back to the character select screen but my progress is not there.

This happens both when I play it on the PowerPak or in an emulator. I've tried two different ROMs (one original, one translated) with the same results.

Am I doing something wrong?

I'd check to make sure the header says that is has 8K WRAM backed up. I don't know the software out there, but some let you change headers.

If you have a hex editor, double check the bits in the specified bytes here. If your header says DISKDUDE! in the header, get a new ROM.

Looks like bit 1 byte 6 needs set high. Check to see if it is?

Or try more ROM's. Probably something wrong with the ROM setup.

It just occurred to me that I got the original and translated ROM from the same source, so if the original version has a problem the translated one will too (since I figured the translated one was patched from that original).

I'll download a new ROM from a different source and see what's up. It'll have to wait until I get home from work :( I hate working on Sundays.

So I downloaded another set of FDS games from UG, but when I compared the versions of Doki Doki Panic (both original and translated) they match the ones I already have. :?

You check the header? If you send me a link through mail I'll check to see if it's right or if I can get it working.

And they might be the same file osted on another site that is also corrupt. For a LONG time, all NES files were corrupt with some DISKDUDE! header and it screwed with everyone. :P

Well I just got the it to hold the save in an emulator (NesTopia 1.39) after resetting all my save paths. Now let's see if I can get it to save on the PowerPak.

edit: Just got it to save on the PowerPak as well. Weird, I don't know it wasn't working yesterday. Thanks for help.

Lol, my "it" was a typo. I guess I couldn't decide between typing "the game" or "it" and decided to type "the it" instead!

Your input is appreciated whether it led to the fix or not!
