Broken PS3 (starts up briefly and shuts off)

Post by christoph »

Before I open this sucker up and start looking around - figured I'd post and see if this was a notorious issue or the problem could be diagnosed right off the bat.

Model: Launch PS3 (with 4 usb ports and all the camera card ports) bought the first month PS3's were released.

Problem:

Plug it all in, hit the power button and it turns green and you can here the engine inside start to whirr, but moments later the green power light turns red and begins to blink 5-6 times and then shuts off. You can keep powering it up over and over again but this happens every time.

Any ideas, advice, comments are appreciated!

Thanks

There are certain modes the ps3 can go into: "hidden" menu's, but that should be a last effort if all else fails and the question is still if that can even help out.
try a new and bigger hd or maybe there lies not the problem
I wouldn't know where to start so this post is actually a bump
Start making a video and include all the lights blinking on console and post on youtube, but let's hear some expert, after the break.

I'd hook it up using composite cables (red, white, yellow). I know if its hit hard enough by a power surge, it'll take it back to composite as the primary AV output. That's what my room mate's did.

Other than that, I got nothing.

Doesn't sound good. All I can offer is preventative measures, mainly what Niode pointed out about blocked ventilation when setup as a Tower unit. My latest dead PS3 was probably because of a low amp extension cord, a serious mistake. You can read my pain with some preventative measures at my YLOD signature link.

Sounds like a power supply problem if there ever was one. Good with electronics? I'd tinker with it. If not, just send it back if the HDD replacement fails. Good luck man.

is a HDD replacement a sort of standard for trying to fix PS3's?

not really its just a way to see if your harddrive is shot, because when the ps3 boots up it starts the read the hdd, and if thats corrupted or a goner the ps3 cant boot (im guessing here) my old problem was that it would boot into the menu but as soon as i loaded anything from my hdd the system would crash, i replaced it and it worked fine.

your problem does kinda sound like it could have something to do with the power supply like 3gen said, or hell maybe even somethings fried, i heard the cell chips can fail too

I'll try that. Thanks for the tips everyone.

On another note, has anyone tried this service before - http://store.wiredextreme.com/PS3-Board ... _p_12.html

Seems to be the cheapest at $80 with shipping included both ways.
