Site Maintenance: No Blog Comments, Forum Downtime

Post by racketboy »

I'm moving the site to a new server tonight.
I've already backed all but the forum so far.
So any comments on the blog from now until it goes live on the new server will disappear.

I will have the forum running for a bit longer before disabling and copying it over to the new server as well.

If all goes well, I'll be running on a fresh server by the end of the night!

Actually, it made it over :)
If you can read this, you are on the new server.
The old one is still there for backup.

BTW, please browse around in the different areas and see if you can find any bugs.
Everything seems to be running well, but I may miss something.

Everything seems fine so far. Hopefully your new server works out better. Think you could survive the digg effect now?

I'm thinking so. I old one used to be able to.
I'm actually planning on hosting the popular images on the old server so it will be less strain on the new/main server. That should really help things.

Only bad thing is, I'm paying about 6 times as much for hosting as I was a couple months ago...

I was only paying $3.50 a month -- now I'm paying $23.95 for the 2 accounts.
If I can balance bandwidth between the two, I might be able to cut the ASO account down to the $10/25GB month plan.

Also you might want to investigate mod_rewrite via .htaccess to disable direct-linking (bandwidth theft) of images.

(I only say this because one of the other forums I go to had an image posted that was pulling from your domain/direct linking instead of uploading their own copy)

Which one was that?
Now that my new server has some great stats packages included (Godaddy wanted more money), I'll be able to monitor that stuff better.
