I picked up a Sega CD 1 the other day. The system would start up, give me the splash screen, but it wouldn't read the disc most of the time. One time I was able to get it to play audio cd's but as soon as I ejected the tray and put in a game it stopped reading the discs.
So after reading a lot of Sega CD model 1 issues I assumed had something to do with the tray not going in correctly and tripping the proper switches. So I've taken apart most of the CD system, and it did appear that the big gear was not tripping a switch on the bottom of the tray. However, I have managed to mess up the placement of the gears so that the lens assembly gear is not longer connected to the rest of the gears, so the Lens will not lower when you attempt to eject the tray, prevent the tray from being ejected.
My question ultimately is, does anybody know how to complete remove the plastic tray that the CD sits on from the rest of the mechanism. I believe I need to get the gears to readjust them, but I can't figure out how that tray comes completely off to expose all the gears.
Thanks

Re: Sega CD 1 not reading discs
Pictures, more detailed info? We'd be able to probably solve your misalignment issue if there was a visual aid as internal pics of Model 1's are pretty scarce.
Also, why didn't you just try to clean the laser!? If it can detect that the drive is closed and it can actually read an audio CD then it works, that's it. More than likely though, this is just a simple case of the CD tray being off track and is easily fixable. Model 1 Sega CD's are pretty delicate and increasingly rare so please exercise care when taking the pictures and be gentle when you go to fix the gearset.
