Anime Based on Video Games

Post by NSBAceAttorney »

I don't really have the time to play a 100+ hour RPG anymore. I want to, but my life doesn't really allow me to. So when I see that a game like Tales of the Abyss has an anime based off of it I'm fast to start watching it, because I can do 13 hours of watching a fansub.

So what are your thoughts on Anime based off of video games and what are some of you favorites?

Mine:
Tales of the Abyss
Valkyria Chronicles

.Hack Roots is good, but mainly as a supplement for .Hack GU as it expands upon the story by showing more of the characters and what happened between the very beginning of GU and Haseo becoming the Terror of Death. I'm not a big fan of the .Hack animes, mainly since they're so slow moving, but I did enjoy Roots because I knew the characters...and Tabby was great to help bring the mood back up. :)

I started watching Wild Arms a while ago, I only saw the first couple of eps but I want to finish it as it seemed interesting and fun. From what I saw and have read it doesn't have many connections to the games outside of the theme. However, Marivel, albeit an older version, is a hidden character in Wild ARMS 2.

The Gungrave anime is easily my favorite game based anime though; the story is fantastic, the characters are well fleshed out, the animation is terrific and the soundtrack is amazing. This is my second favorite anime period next to Angelic Layer and is also my favorite drama anime series. They took a relatively bare bones plot from the original game and turned it into a full blown mafia story that leads into the sci-fi content with the Necrolization tech.
Even if you thought the game wasn't very good (I loved it btw), check out the show as it is incredible.

I watched the Rockman.EXE series. Only because I love megaman so much.

Fatal Fury had a pretty decent anime. Story not the greatest, but it had some good fight scenes for its time. The choreography was quite good, much like the street fighter 2 anime movie.

Fighting games don't get good anime outside of those two though.

Samurai Showdown, Tekken, and Battle Arena Toshinden are all horrible.

There's also the Voltage Fighter Gowkaiser anime - it was made by the same guy that did the Fatal Fury anime (in fact, the character designs for the game itself were made by the same guy that did the Fatal Fury anime).

I agree with VincentX that Gungrave was quite good, though I felt that the connection between the fantastic mafia story and sci fi video game-esque battles was awkward to say the least.

I've seen the Devil May Cry anime, and I won't hesitate to say that it wasn't very good.

Oh yes, Masami Obari. The king of the big boobs and angular faces. You could cut your hand on their cheek bones. :D

The game is bizarre and middle of the road, but the anime is just creepy.

A bit too much of the sibling love going on in that one for my taste.

He actually did a full series at one point called Virus Buster Surge, i think it was based on a game as well, but im not sure.

On second thought the Night Warriors anime is ok, not great but ok.

Then there are animes based on hentai games like Fate Stay Night and Bible Black. Also Clannad.

Their games, sort of, kinda, well you'll have to be the judge.

Yeah, the Night Warriors anime was pretty good. Enjoyable if you're a Darkstalkers fan, and that's as good as we can hope for.

Street Fighter 2 V.

And I used to like it when I was into the series, but not anymore... Pokemon. It basically took the story of the games and expanded it, adding new adventures and a recurring group of antagonists.

And not "video game", but... I realized today that Buffy the Vampire Slayer would make an AWESOME ANIME SERIES! Like Blood+ with gag bits (chibis, painbumps, and hammerspace-related whoopass).
