Tales of Legendia or Tales of the Abyss?

Post by mobiusclimber »

I'm thinking about starting on another RPG soon (having given up on Suikoden IV for now) and was thinking I'd like to play a Tales of... game. I think I'd like to try one of these two. Which would you guys recommend?

ok so here's the breakdown for these 2 games.

story wise tales of legendia is not a strong as abyss is. legendia has a decent story but it doesn't really have a lot of complexity. the characters are like able to enough to keep you going though.

gameplay wise legendia feels more like a classic tales game, in the vain of phantasia, destiny, and eternia. abyss has more of the new tales approach in the vain of symphonia. if you don't know what im talking about (new to tales series) then just know that abyss is alot more fluent and complex than legendia. personally i enjoy abyss's gameplay a lot more.

my opinion- probably go for abyss since it has more options for gamers to enjoy. if your looking for more of a modern day rpg, go for abyss and if your looking more for a classic rpg, go for legendia.

I would go for Tales of the Abyss. I enjoyed the story much more than Tales of Legendia. :)

Ok yeah that makes sense. Probably going w/ Abyss then, since Symphonia is my favorite out of the ones I've played (Phantasia, Eternia, World Radiant Mythologies and Symphonia 2).

Definitely Abyss. It's a much longer and more satisfying game; the story is much better, as well. It is also a good segway from Symphonia into Vesperia. You can finish Abyss in about 60 hours if you really rush through things, and it can go up to 100 hours if you take your time and do some side-quests.

This is something I'm wondering too. I've never played a Tales game in my life but they look good. Problem is I don't know where to start with them because they all look pretty similar at a glance.

The first one I ever played was Symphonia, and it's very good. The story is a bit cliched in places, but it's very well done just the same. Love the battle engine too. ToD2 (aka Eternia) is fun, but the story and characters really did nothing for me. Doesn't help that the voice acting is below sub par. (Did the director hire his mistress' cousins and record them in the bathroom?) Tales of Phantasia is ok, but would be more impressive if played on an SNES back in the day. Graphically, it's amazing (like playing the original Star Ocean), but I didn't get too interested in the plot. Tales of the World Mythology (whatever it's called) is a side game, basically a dungeon crawler. It's fun, but ends up being a bit too repetitive. It's also more about fan service, as characters from other Tales of games make an appearance.

I think I've so far had poor luck picking which games to play in the series (besides Symphonia). Most of the games are just fun action-y turn-based RPGs, but it's a toss up if you get one w/ a good story, an ok story or no story. LOL

As far as I'm concerned, there are only four Tales of games worth investing the time to completion in:

Tales of Phantasia (PS1 version; there are translations out for it)

Tales of Symphonia (GC)

Tales of the Abyss (PS2)

Tales of Vesperia (X360)

I really didn't enjoy Legendia that much. Abyss has my favorite cast of characters. Jade is made of so much win.
