Over at the Racketboy IRC channel, we were discussing what it really means to be a retro gamer, and I thought it made for an interesting conversation. For example, I'm 25 and I grew up playing the SNES, so I consider that, and anything that came before it to be "retro", but someone older than me may disagree.
I know that we have many different users of many different ages here that can weigh in!
What does it really mean to be a "retro gamer"?
Re: What does it really mean to be a "retro gamer"?
I'm more than a decade older, but I share your opinion. Maybe because after the SNES/Genesis generation, gaming went 3D and everything since then seems to me like a refinement and expansion of the same thing. N64 and the Playstation will never be retro to me, no matter how old they are.jfe2 wrote:For example, I'm 25 and I grew up playing the SNES, so I consider that, and anything that came before it to be "retro", but someone older than me may disagree.

Not giving a shit about such labels?
On the topic of what is considered retro, I think that games need to be three generations old to be retro (so for now, SNES/Gen/TG-16). For PC games, I check if the release date matches my standard for console games. (ie. is it about as old as an SNES/Gen/TG-16 game?)

Wow, I can't believe i haven't read that one before. Good stuff.
I'd say part nostalgia, part liking the style of older games that has since changed or evolved.

You must love the Power Glove. Not only in spite of how bad it is, but in fact because it's so bad.

I think retro for me means more than one generation of gaming behind. N64 and PS1 are retro to me, but gamecube and xbox still have a little to go. I'm 18, grew up playing an NES I found in my aunt and uncle's basement, which is pretty retro either way.
My life for Aiur.
