Sega Saturn Model 1 Missing Door Ajar Sensor

Post by blackhellfire »

Hello all,

First post here and I was looking to find out why my door ajar sensor for the CD tray on my Model 1 Sega Saturn is missing. Not only that but many things like the power supply are connected to the top cover of the Saturn. The hole in the metal plate where the sensor is supposed to sit is not even cut out. It's an MK-80000 model with Oval buttons, not circular, there's no coils around the laser to be the sign of a Sanyo and nothing stating that it was modified or replaced by someone else. I've looked at many photos of every model and have looked through a good number of websites and have found none like mine or heard of the description I've given. Can someone help me identify this Model and why it's missing the sensor and rearranged?

Attached are links to photos taken of said Saturn.

Thank you for your time.

Does it have a bank of dip switches on the side or back? I've seen pictures of dev units and with that extra it wouldn't surprise me if the insides were rearranged a bit. Oval power and reset means it is an earlier model for sure.

You have a Sanyo.

There were two revisions, one has the switch on the board and later versions along with Blockbuster rental systems were built a lot tougher than normal Saturns and featured the disc switch on the top of the Saturn case where the lid itself comes to a close.

You have the second revision board with the ultra small top case lid switch. It is unfortunately unmoddable.

I can get over the fact that I won't have the same dismantle process as everyone else. Does this change the value of my system at all, would it make more popular or even less wanted? I'll be pulling the rest of it apart today to see the jumper settings for the region switch mod and will try to take photos of the underside to show if anything else is out of place. If what Mod-man-extreme says is true than I just might throw it against the wall, is there anyone else who can corroborate this? I don't want to give up that easily so, I'm just asking. And the switch or sensor is located exactly where on mine? You said on the top cover where the lid closes but is it at the front or side of the tray, can I get to it if I had the right tools? Thanks to you guys that helped me.

If you smash it I'll find you and kick your ass, modded or legit Saturns are amazing systems.

Basically its the little switch next to the door on the underside where the wire is leading to. I don't know how to perform any mods on that particular model personally I own one that was formerly a Blockbuster unit and I just have it on my shelf as a spare Saturn.

My guess is that the sensor is just closing the circuit. So bypass the sensor by either cutting the wires and connecting them directly, or by connecting the two points on the CD board where the wires are connected.

Well I tried doing the region switch mod after I found the sensor you described, and it looked like you could just tape the sensor back even though it's very small, but it seems like one of my jumper traces came off while try to solder a wire to it, would this cause a flashing green power light and nothing else booting? I tried resoldering to it and did it with the switch on and then proccedded to take it off since it didn't work and it still produces the same issue. Any thoughts gentlemen?

Maybe you should stop before you destroy a rare version Saturn any more?

This.

Blockbuster rental Saturns are the Tonka Tough variety. They're rare, uncommon, and built out of freaking titanium to withstand rentals and abuse. But there is a limit. After all it's tougher on the outside and drive, not the board.

I'm guessing you're new to this and have never modded before. The first thing to do in modding nowadays is read a guide and watch some videos. It is IMPERATIVE that you know what you're doing or what you're working on before diving in. Console versions, board revisions and more are an easy find online, heck even Wikipedia is fine for a nice basic overview.

But please let this one go to a good home and someone who can fix it.

Model 2 Saturns are an easy and affordable find online or even here on the boards (Yes I'm giving you permission to post a WTB/WTT (want to buy or want to trade) thread here on the boards for a Model 2 Saturn before the normal time limit) and work with the incredibly easy to install modchip. If you go that route you'll save yourself the headache and also get region-free and backup compatibility with it.
