Great remakes of classic "golden age" arcade games?

Post by shadobeni »

Or does such a thing even exist?

I haven't actually played a lot of the arcade classics from the "golden age" in the 70s-early 80s. At least not in their original arcade form.

The only remake I've played was pong on ps1 which I thought had some very fun variations on the classic game. The only thing that diminished the experience was the fact that a ps1 controller could never be accurate or precise enough to control the paddle. Otherwise I thought it was a great, fresh take and wished there was a better way of controlling it.

I really liked Tempest 2000 alot. There's also a few cool remakes on the DS, like Dig Dug: Digging Strike. Last but not least, the Space Invaders remake that was on the N64, GBA, and I think (but not sure) PS1

Robotron 64 is a pretty good update to Robotron 2084. It doesn't replace it by any means, but it's still good fun. They scaled the difficulty so you can actually play for 15 minutes or so with out getting game over. It's still worth setting up MAME for the original though.

I also agree on Dig Dug: Digging Strike. Pretty cool update. Space Invaders Extreme on the DS is also excellent. Wish I had that paddle adapter for the DS. On the other hand, I didn't like Retro Atari Classics very much. The updated graphics look like crap, and the games don't play very well either way. Missile Command on the touchpad is pretty sweet, I'll give you that. The biggest disappointment with it was Gravitar. Love Gravitar on MAME, can't enjoy it on the DS at all for some reason I can't quite pinpoint.

Ah, yes I forgot about Space Invaders Extreme. That is pure awesomeness. There was also a cool remake of Bubble Bobble for the DS.

And of course, Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. It's mostly just upgraded graphics but it's gorgeous.

I had a lot of fun with this one, got all but one achievement on it. I burned through an afternoon playing this non-stop. It's a classic for a reason

You like Bubble Bobble revolution? I only play the Classic mode on that.
