Best Looking PS2 Games?
I have my PS2 hooked up through Component now an would really like to see what the PS2 can do. Valkyrie Profile 2 looks beautiful, so what other games should I try?

Re: Best Looking PS2 Games?
That's a subjective question, as some games can be artistically beautiful while others are merely technically beautiful.
Anyway, to contribute rather than point out the flaw in your question, here's a few for each
Artistic beauty: Ico, Odin Sphere, Katamari Damacy, Genji
Technical beauty: Klonoa 2, Gradius V, Resident Evil 4, Persona 4

Shadow of the Colossus. I literally stunned me when I first had it going through component.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Gran Turismo 4 supports 1080i.
I though Final Fantasy 12 looked good as well.

While it looked amazing, the frame rate made it pretty ugly at times (in motion it looks a lot worse than a static image.)Flake wrote:Shadow of the Colossus. I literally stunned me when I first had it going through component.

Don't forget that Shadow Of the Colossus also has a 480p and widescreen 16:9 mode that can be activated via the options menu when you pause the game too.
If you want to see the PS2 in it's absolute finest hour play Gran Turismo 4 or Tourist Trophy, both were made by Polyphony Digital using the custom GT4 engine and look absofuckingloutely amazing. But it get's even better! BOTH games also feature 480p, 720p, or 1080i AND a 16:9 mode. ON THE PS2! From a technical and gameplay standpoint, two of the most amazing games on the console.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention both games are locked at 60fps, PERIOD. No dips, no excuses. This is one of those rare examples of amazing talent, devotion to accuracy and a general want to make the best product possible actually hitting its goal and immediately surpassing it.
Also of note are:
REZ: miles and miles and MILES of polygons wireframed upon each other in increasingly complex layers which made for hell on the Dreamcast when initially programmed and was then limited to 30fps but had 480p. The PS2 port lacks the 480p mode, but makes up for it with silky smooth 60fps gameplay and the very much welcome addition of the PS2's optical audio out via SP/DIF to really make the game's amazing soundtrack shine. This was THE FIRST PlayStation ANYTHING game I ever played and it still blows my mind every time I pop it in.
Killzone: Gory gritty M-Rated action at it's finest with a few quirks her and there that actually aren't all that bad. There's some slowdown at times and the controls can be overly sensitive if you don't have a light analog stick finger, but the gameplay is solid and it's a well deserved classic to add into your PS2 library. Graphically it's really incredible at some times to see just how many polys they managed to pull out of the PS2, but all the nice little touches and graphical tricks limited it to 480i only. I believe the is a 16:9 mode though so you can still really get a nice sense of action on a newer TV.
Tekken 5: Hands down one of the most gorgeous PS2 titles and even up there with GT4 & Tourist trophy. This took the PS2 to it's limits when it came to 3D fighters. Smooth crisp 60fps gameplay at all times, gorgeous and lush environments with tons of stuff going on like massive waterfalls, fires, street fights, penguins in the arctic & more. Running at a max resolution of 480p and also having an included 16:9 mode this is one of prime examples of a superbly made PS2 game from the era when it was still top dog.

I find it borderline absurd that nobody's mentioned God of War yet!
Some Yakuza cutscenes looked brilliant, and Soul Calibur 2/3 had some bump mapping if I'm not mistaken. Too bad PS2's video output is 'dirtier' than the Dreamcast though.

Funny story about VP2; the Japanese version supports 1080i, but the US and PAL versions do not. So, the Japanese version looks even better than what you have seen!NSBAceAttorney wrote:I have my PS2 hooked up through Component now an would really like to see what the PS2 can do. Re: Best Looking PS2 Games?
Dragon Quest VIII is big, beautiful and supports widescreen. Okami is also quite stunning no widescreen though. I honestly think it looks better on the PS2. The Wii version didn't have that game looking like paper effect like the PS2 version. Also Devil May Cry 3, Ecco, Guilty Gear, Haunting Ground, Metal Gear Solid 3, Onimusha Dawn Of Dreams, Rez, Rogue Galaxy, Silent Hill 2 & 3 and Zone Of The Enders The 2nd Runner. I pretty much said WOW when I fired these games up on my PS2.
