I'm not aware of any way to mod or trick the DC to read CDr media.
There is some debate on if the later versions of the DC actually have the ability to keep you from playing burned games with some claiming they have never had a DC that can't read a burned game. So maybe one of the members more experienced with DC modding and such will have an answer; but as far as I know if it can't read it now it simply won't.

My friend has a November 2000 model and we have gotten it to read a few burned discs. It appears to have no problems reading the NES emulator discs we have burned. It played burns of Trigger Heart Exelica and Under Defeat. Out of about 20 burns, that was all it would play.

These models do appear to play some burns, but it's hit or miss. Mostly miss.

I remember a thread here on Racketboy about this, there was a link to another forum with a hell of a lot of info on the matter. I kinda remember people saying that the later model CAN read CD-Rs.

adcx64, did you even try to get a CD-R to run on it yet? See if you can get a CD-R that's confirmed to work on some one else's system and see if it works on yours.

If your Dreamcast can NOT read CD-Rs, I would suggest just getting another console. They're pretty cheap and easy to get, would be a lot easier than modding your current system. :D

you need to get new CDI images.
They need to be Track 1 DATA Track DATA [work with all DC]
Older CDI images are Track 1 AUDIO Track 2 DATA [works with V. 0 and 1 only]
PSone, Xbox, PS2, DC, SS Mod Service, PM for details

Here is what I do for an CDI with diskjuggler demo version

1. Open a new disk image
2. Pick the file
3. Click the advanced tab
4. Select the following settings -
Mode: Mode 2
Block: Either 2048 or 2332 has usually worked for me. I'd just leave it for now
Select RAW write (very important)
If the file is slightly over the CD-r space select Overburn

5. Start: your disk should burn fine.
