Basic Genres (help me make a list)

Post by noiseredux »

If you were to make a list of the most basic genres used to group games, what would you come up with? To elaborate, I'm trying to come up with the LEAST amount of genres to separate games into groups. How would you do this?

Action/Adventure
Fighting
Game Simulator
Puzzle
Racing
RPG
Shooter
Sports
Strategy

what am I missing? What would you change?

And to elaborate: I'm not talking about "survival horror" as a genre. I'm thinking of that as a sub-genre. So where would that fit in? Action/Adventure I suppose?

Do you see what I'm trying to do?

Seperate Action and Adventure. Then you have it.

I agree with the above, seperate action and adventure, most surhors would fit in the latter, and the ones that wouldn't would fit in the former

Platformer / Sidescroller?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'm thinking Action.

Okay so on the separating Action and Adventure, can you guys illustrate yr point a bit. I mean, list a handful of games that you'd call "action" and a handful you'd call "adventure"?

Shoot-em-ups?
Unless, of course, you are putting that under "shooter".

edit: And by "game simulator" do you mean like Life Simulators like The Sims or Harvest Moon?
And are you putting Music games in the simulation section as well?

correct. Shoot-em-ups and run-n-guns are a sub-genre of Shooters.

I agree with platformer/sidescroller going in action.

Examples of Adventure: Myst, Penumbra, Amnesia, various text and point and clicks

Examples of Action: Sonic, Mario 64, Ninja Gaiden

I assume you mean to lump rhythm games into puzzle? Make sure to put Punch Out in there too.

@Hobie, yes I think I'd call rhythm a sub-genre of puzzle.

in my head Bubble Bobble, Parasol Stars, Toki Tori -- these games are puzzle games. Agreed?
