how to remove cigarette smell from ps1 games?

Post by axlryder »

So I just bought a couple ps1 games for a great price, BUT they reek of cigarettes. I switched out the horribly yellowed plastic cases for some others I had lying around, so the appearance of the games isn't too bad. However, the discs themselves and the manuals still reek despite not being too yellowed. Any advices on how to remove the smell without damaging the games/manuals?

You can try putting the manuals in a brown paper bag (hell even plastic should work) with some baking soda in the bottom. The baking soda should suck up most of the smell. I did this with my car owners manual and it worked perfect.

As for the discs, I have no idea, the baking soda shouldn't hurt it.

i second the baking soda. or try the stuff cats piss in. i forget what it is called.

but a while back i bought a console and it smelled HORRIBLY of smoke. i bought a huge box of stuff-that-cats-piss-in and just placed the console on top of it and closed the box for about a month. the console has that new car smell to it now!

i don't see why it wouldn't work with cds. but it will take time.
if you took a shit, please put it back

I also second the Kitty Litter :P

It should work really well too. While doing this, remember to keep the bag sealed for 3-4 days. It takes a bit.

Baking soda a great idea. Arm & Hammer even advertises leaving a box in the fridge to soak up last weeks leftovers smell.

As for the discs, a simple cleaning of plastic polish will be beneficial for a shine as well.
Go easy on the label side though, maybe lightly with rubbing alcohol.

I have been through this trying to clean some cameras and their cases. I was able to do ok with the cameras, but the cases had a foam liner in them that were pretty much impossible to remove the smell from. I tried:

Febreeze
Cat Litter
Baking Soda
Wood chips
Some sort of car smoke odor remover that they use in hospitals

Since you're just trying to get the smell out of paper I'd try the baking soda since it shouldn't hurt it.

I am confused by baking soda, is it the same stuff they put into dough and cakes?

Hey I've cleaned plenty of Playstation games using (Of all things) "Chest Rub". The product I use is made in Australia but depending on where you live they probably have the exact same or a very similar version of it. It smells like... Mint?

So if you'd prefer your games to smell minty fresh™ then chest rub is the way to go. :D
